Author: Louis Hjelmslev
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027246394
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 244
Book Description
The present book is the English translation of Louis Hjelmslev’s lectures on glossematics, the theory of language developed in the forties by him and Hans Jørgen Uldall, and taught at the University of Copenhagen in 1942-43, thoroughly taken down in shorthand by his student Harry Wett Frederiksen. The document, unpublished so far, is one-of-a-kind in its pedagogical dimension, as it aims to introduce students, and now readers, to the glossematician’s workshop, informally discussing its theoretical framework, the operations employed in description and the reasons why such operations were devised via a concrete analysis of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy-tale “The Sweethearts”. Overall, the document offers a unique glimpse into the machinery of one of the most epistemologically aware and rigorous theories of language developed in the 20th century.

Lectures on Language Performance
Author: C.E. Osgood
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642872891
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 286
Book Description
Titling this book Lectures on Language Performance was not done to be cleverly "eye-catching"-the title is quite literally appropriate. With minor adaptations for a general reading audience, the eight chapters in this volume are the actual lectures I gave as the Linguistic Society of America Professor for its Summer Institute held at the University of Illinois in 1978. The eight lectures are an "anticipation" of my magnum opus-I guess when one has passed into his sixties he can be forgiven for saying this! a much larger volume (or volumes) to be titled Toward an Abstract Performance Grammar. The book in your hands is an anticipation of this work in at least three senses: for one thing, it doesn't pretend to cover the burgeoning literature relevant to the comparatively new field of psycholinguistics (my study at home is literally overflowing with reference materials, aU coded for various sections of the planned vol ume(s»; for another, both the style and the content of these Lectures were tailored to a very broad social science audience -including students and teachers in anthropology, linguistics, philosophy and psychology (as well as in various applied fields like second language learning and bilingualism); and for yet another thing, many sections of the planned magnum opus are hardly even touched on here-for example, these lectures do not "anticipate" major sections to be devoted to Efficiency vs.

History of Linguistics 2021
Author: Savina Raynaud
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027246351
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 292
Book Description
This volume comprises two invited talks and fifteen selected papers, chosen from over 200 submissions to the 15th International Conference on the History of Language Sciences (ICHoLS XV). Originally scheduled to be held in Milan in 2020, the conference was postponed and moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Held from August 23-27, 2021, it connected scholars from 30 countries across various time zones. The volume is divided into three parts. The first part, devoted to General and Particular Issues in the History of Linguistics, recalls classical authors in relation to contemporary ones as well as newly established disciplines and subtle epistemological inquiries. The second part, Antiquity, mainly investigates the Sanskrit language and various descriptive and didactic studies, approached from both ancient and contemporary metalinguistic frameworks. The third part deals with Sixteenth to Twentieth Century Works, ranging from the Tamil language to American archives, and from experimental phonostylistics to the history of monosemy.

Heidegger on Language and Death
Author: Joachim L. Oberst
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1441189726
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 237
Book Description
Martin Heidegger was one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century. His analysis of human existence proves an inexhaustible ground for thinkers of all backgrounds who seek answers for their specific questions left open or opened up by our times. This book explores the intrinsic connection between two fundamentally human traits, language and death. Heidegger addresses each of these traits in depth, without ever explicitly outlining their relationship in a separate theory. However, in a close examination of Heidegger's magnum opus, Being and Time, Joachim L. Oberst uncovers a connection in three basic steps. Ultimately the author argues that the human invention of language is motivated by the drive towards immortality - language emerges from the experience of mortality as a response to it. This is a refreshing look at one of the most challenging and influential philosophers of our times.
