Book Description
Accurate and efficient computer algorithms for factoring matrices, solving linear systems of equations, and extracting eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Regardless of the software system used, the book describes and gives examples of the use of modern computer software for numerical linear algebra. It begins with a discussion of the basics of numerical computations, and then describes the relevant properties of matrix inverses, factorisations, matrix and vector norms, and other topics in linear algebra. The book is essentially self- contained, with the topics addressed constituting the essential material for an introductory course in statistical computing. Numerous exercises allow the text to be used for a first course in statistical computing or as supplementary text for various courses that emphasise computations.

Book Description
Parallel MATLAB for Multicore and Multinode Computers is the first book on parallel MATLAB and the first parallel computing book focused on the design, code, debug, and test techniques required to quickly produce well-performing parallel programs. MATLAB is currently the dominant language of technical computing with one million users worldwide, many of whom can benefit from the increased power offered by inexpensive multicore and multinode parallel computers. MATLAB is an ideal environment for learning about parallel computing, allowing the user to focus on parallel algorithms instead of the details of implementation. This book covers more parallel algorithms and parallel programming models than any other parallel programming book due to the succinctness of MATLAB and presents a "hands-on" approach with numerous example programs. Wherever possible, the examples are drawn from widely known and well-documented parallel benchmark codes representative of many real applications.

Book Description
Professor Philip G. Burke, CBE, FRS formally retired on 30 September 1998. To recognise this occasion some of his colleagues, friends, and former students decided to hold a conference in his honour and to present this volume as a dedication to his enormous contribution to the theoretical atomic physics community. The conference and this volume of the invited talks reflect very closely those areas with which he has mostly been asso- ated and his influence internationally on the development of atomic physics coupled with a parallel growth in supercomputing. Phil’s wide range of interests include electron-atom/molecule collisions, scattering of photons and electrons by molecules adsorbed on surfaces, collisions involving oriented and chiral molecules, and the development of non-perturbative methods for studying multiphoton processes. His devel- ment of the theory associated with such processes has enabled important advances to be made in our understanding of the associated physics, the interpretation of experimental data, has been invaluable in application to fusion processes, and the study of astrophysical plasmas (observed by both ground- and space-based telescopes). We therefore offer this volume as our token of affection and respect to Philip G. Burke, with the hope that it may also fill a gap in the literature in these important fields.

Book Description
This expansive volume describes the history of numerical methods proposed for solving linear algebra problems, from antiquity to the present day. The authors focus on methods for linear systems of equations and eigenvalue problems and describe the interplay between numerical methods and the computing tools available at the time. The second part of the book consists of 78 biographies of important contributors to the field. A Journey through the History of Numerical Linear Algebra will be of special interest to applied mathematicians, especially researchers in numerical linear algebra, people involved in scientific computing, and historians of mathematics.

Book Description
Matrix algebra is one of the most important areas of mathematics for data analysis and for statistical theory. This much-needed work presents the relevant aspects of the theory of matrix algebra for applications in statistics. It moves on to consider the various types of matrices encountered in statistics, such as projection matrices and positive definite matrices, and describes the special properties of those matrices. Finally, it covers numerical linear algebra, beginning with a discussion of the basics of numerical computations, and following up with accurate and efficient algorithms for factoring matrices, solving linear systems of equations, and extracting eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Book Description
PDE & Level Sets: Algorithmic Approaches to Static & Motion Imagery is specially dedicated to the segmentation of complex shapes from the field of imaging sciences using level sets and PDEs. It covers the fundamentals of level sets, different kinds of concepts of both geodesic curvature flows and planar flows, as well as the power of incorporation of regional-statistics in level set framework. In covering this material, this book presents segmentation of object-in-motion imagery based on level sets in eigen analysis framework, while also presenting classical problems of boundary completion in cognitive images, like the pop-up of subjective contours in the famous triangle of Kanizsa using surface evolution framework, or the mean curvature evolution of a graph with respect to the Riemannian metric induced by the image. All results are presented for modal completion of cognitive objects with missing boundaries.

Book Description
Numerical analysis is the subject of applied mathematics concerned mainly with using computers in evaluating or approximating mathematical models. As such, it is crucial to all applications of mathematics in science and engineering, as well as being an important discipline on its own. Acta Numerica surveys annually the most important developments in numerical analysis and scientific computing. The subjects and authors of the substantive survey articles are chosen by a distinguished international editorial board so as to report the most important developments in the subject in a manner accessible to the wider community of professionals with an interest in scientific computing.
