Excerpt from Leaves From a Family Journal Strength said, What matters the task? Feel you not that to you it will all be easy? It is the weak alone Who weigh the burden. Atlas smiled, though he bore the world on his shoulders. Faith added, Have confidence, and the mountains which obstruct your path shall vanish like clouds, the sea shall bear you up, and the rainbow shall become a bridge for your feet. Hope whispered, Behold, before you lies repose after fatigue, plenty will follow after scarcity. On, on, for the desert leads to the promised land. Book Description
Excerpt from Leaves: From a Trooper's Diary Yesterday I took a stroll to the site of my first camp. It is not far from Girard College, and I found that the walls of the extending city had encroached somewhat upon the place. But there was the field, without doubt, looking as green and fresh as on that summer day, eight years ago, when first I entered it. The old house still stands under the ancient elms; the birds - could they be the same? - still flit and chirp among the leaves. The surroundings are quiet. No one lives in the house, apparently. There is nothing to tell the chance observer that this green slope was once bald and slippery with the wear of martial feet; that here a thousand men lived for two mouths in preparation for war. Sitting awhile upon the fence, and musing, I had a new sense of the pleasures of memory. It required but little effort of the imagination to restore to this weedy field the well-worn paths, the rows of snowy tents, the throngs of bran-new soldiery. Nor were the stirring scenes outside of camp less vividly recalled. Bull Run! where really for the first time in our war, "Red Battle stamp'd his foot, and nations felt the shock." It is the most singular field in history; from which the real victors fled, leaving the vanquished in wondering possession! Book Description
“A novelistic mosaic that simultaneously reads like a thriller and like a strange, dreamlike excursion into the subconscious.” —The New York Times Years ago, when House of Leaves was first being passed around, it was nothing more than a badly bundled heap of paper, parts of which would occasionally surface on the Internet. No one could have anticipated the small but devoted following this terrifying story would soon command. Starting with an odd assortment of marginalized youth -- musicians, tattoo artists, programmers, strippers, environmentalists, and adrenaline junkies -- the book eventually made its way into the hands of older generations, who not only found themselves in those strangely arranged pages but also discovered a way back into the lives of their estranged children. Now this astonishing novel is made available in book form, complete with the original colored words, vertical footnotes, and second and third appendices. The story remains unchanged, focusing on a young family that moves into a small home on Ash Tree Lane where they discover something is terribly wrong: their house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Of course, neither Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Will Navidson nor his companion Karen Green was prepared to face the consequences of that impossibility, until the day their two little children wandered off and their voices eerily began to return another story -- of creature darkness, of an ever-growing abyss behind a closet door, and of that unholy growl which soon enough would tear through their walls and consume all their dreams.
