Book Description
This book traces every use of the Hebrew word, עוֹלָם/olam, in the Old Testament and shows that English translations of the word have been influenced by Greek "leaven" and Roman Catholic "tradition." Many early church fathers resisted the "leaven," and many historical interludes given in the book reveal that there was resistance to the imposition of the "traditional" view over the "original" one down through history. In brief, the word, olam, is flexible. It can accommodate both eternal and temporal duration. Lasting is one very good translation for olam because it has the same elasticity as the Hebrew word. The same is true for the Greek word, aionios. However, modern English translations use instead fixed (inflexible) words such as forever, eternal, and everlasting. This has led to much confusion--Jews thinking circumcision is eternal, that the land at the east end of the Mediterranean is an eternal inheritance for physical Jews, and that hell must go on forever. It is very unwise to translate a flexible word with an inflexible word. Hell is lasting, but not everlasting. Circumcision was lasting for a significant period but not everlasting. The Aaronic priesthood was lasting, but not everlasting. The Day of Atonement lasted for a long time but ended at Calvary. Other substitutes for lasting include enduring, continuing, and agelong.

The Prodigal Church
Author: Jared C. Wilson
Publisher: Crossway
ISBN: 1433544644
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
Pastors want to reach the lost with the good news of Jesus. However, we've too often assumed this requires loud music, flashy lights, and skinny jeans. In this gentle manifesto, Jared Wilson—a pastor who knows what it's like to serve in a large attractional church—challenges pastors to reconsider their priorities when it comes to how they "do church" and reach people in their communities. Writing with the grace and kindness of a trusted friend, Wilson encourages pastors to reexamine the Bible's teaching, not simply return to a traditional model for tradition's sake. He then sets forth an alternative to both the attractional and the traditional models: an explicitly biblical approach that is gospel focused, grace based, and fruit oriented.

Short Stories by Jesus
Author: Amy-Jill Levine
Publisher: Harper Collins
ISBN: 006219819X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 275
Book Description
The renowned biblical scholar, author of The Misunderstood Jew, and general editor for The Jewish Annotated New Testament interweaves history and spiritual analysis to explore Jesus’ most popular teaching parables, exposing their misinterpretations and making them lively and relevant for modern readers. Jesus was a skilled storyteller and perceptive teacher who used parables from everyday life to effectively convey his message and meaning. Life in first-century Palestine was very different from our world today, and many traditional interpretations of Jesus’ stories ignore this disparity and have often allowed anti-Semitism and misogyny to color their perspectives. In this wise, entertaining, and educational book, Amy-Jill Levine offers a fresh, timely reinterpretation of Jesus’ narratives. In Short Stories by Jesus, she analyzes these “problems with parables,” taking readers back in time to understand how their original Jewish audience understood them. Levine reveals the parables’ connections to first-century economic and agricultural life, social customs and morality, Jewish scriptures and Roman culture. With this revitalized understanding, she interprets these moving stories for the contemporary reader, showing how the parables are not just about Jesus, but are also about us—and when read rightly, still challenge and provoke us two thousand years later.
