This book integrates two related fields of study, learning and expertise, as they have been applied to consumer behavior. The first part of the book focuses on two central hypotheses that are seldom explicitly endorsed or rejected. In the normal course of everyday life, consumers become increasingly familiar with the products and service that they use. Possibly, over time people learn from these experiences and gain true expertise in a variety of product domains. Thus, the first hypothesis that increased familiarity leads to increased expertise: learning from experience (H1). Second, it seems reasonable that as expertise increases, people become more efficient consumers: increased consumer welfare (H2). The authors’ analyses reveal that these hypotheses are often, but not always supported, and sometimes opposite results obtain. The remaining parts of the book provide systematic reviews of the theories, methods, and applications that have been prominent in research on consumer learning and expertise.

Learning is a fundamental process underlying consumer behavior. This is especially true when (new) products or services are purchased and used for the first time. Existing research in psychology and marketing has focused on pedagogical principles to explain how consumers learn to use products in offline settings. This research aims to broaden this scope by exploring learning processes in online contexts and by drawing on an andragogical, i.e. adult learning, and cognitive perspective. Using a multi-method approach based on a qualitative study including semi-structured interviews and non-participant observations, and a quantitative part involving a survey and experiments, our results contribute to the understanding of consumer e-learning. First, we identify how and by which processes adult consumers learn in an online environment. Second, we determine andragogical and online factors that help reducing consumers' cognitive effort in new product learning, and consequently improve their appropriation of the product usage. In a context in which the ineffectiveness of traditional step-by-step instructions leads to reduced insight-based learning and product usage intention, this research contributes theoretically to the field of consumer learning by investigating consumer learning from an andragogical and cognitive perspective, and addressing critical issues such as product unlearning.

In the traditional discrete choice model, we assume that consumers know the product attributes without uncertainty. Learning models extend the discrete choice model by assuming that consumers have incomplete information about product attributes and that they can gradually resolve the uncertainty as they receive more information about the product over time. In the first chapter of this dissertation, I conduct a survey on literature of empirical learning models. I distinguish the learning models into three categories. First, demand side learning models which focuses on the effect of different types of consumer learning on demand. Second, supply side learning models which studies the firm's strategies when it does not have full information of consumer demand. Third, consumer learning and firm's marketing strategies which focuses on the interaction of consumer learning and firm's strategies. Empirical learning models have been proved to be a fruitful area of research activity and consumer learning dynamics have been intensively investigated, but there are two areas for future research --- empirical models that combines consumer learning and firm dynamics and empirical models that feature both consumer learning and firm learning.
