En analysant les structures conditionnelles de l'arabe classique tant dans la tradition grammaticale arabe que dans la tradition grammaticale européenne, la recherche montre des divergences importantes entre les deux traditions en ce qui concerne la hiérarchie des particules conditionnelles, le concept de phrase conditionnelle, la corrélation entre structures conditionnelles et l'opposition accompli/inaccompli. La thèse examine ensuite comment les systèmes du type ʾin sǎrṭ ǧawāb al-šarṭ (ʾin protase apodose) ont été traités par les plus anciens grammairiens arabes et considère l'opposition entre les formes verbales yaqum vs qāma comme raison d'inclusion/exclusion des structures verbales dans le/du système conditionnel. Une hypothèse modale est ainsi faite que la frontière entre formes verbales yaqum vs qāma dans le contexte conditonnel peut être interprétée en termes d'opposition entre les deux catégories modales aristotéliciennes de "possibilité" vs "nécessité". L'hypothèse, testée sur le Coran, semble apporter un nouvel éclairage sur l'interprétation du système verbal dans son ensemble, montrant que la complexité cohérente du système verbal de l'arabe classique pourrait être expliqué, dans la perspective d'une "sémantique relationnelle", par une interprétation purement relativiste de l'opposition entre conjugaison à préfixes et conjugaison à suffixes dans les différents contextes pragmatiques.

This book is an investigation of Arabic derivational morphology that focuses on the relationship between verb meaning and linguistic form. Beginning with the ground form, the book offers a comprehensive analysis of the most common verb patterns of Arabic from a lexical semantic perspective. Peter Glanville explains why verbs with seemingly unrelated meanings share the same phonological shape, and analyses sets of words that contain the same consonantal root to arrive at a common abstraction. He uses both contemporary and historical data to explore the semantics of reflexivity, symmetry, causation, and repetition, and argues that the verb patterns of Arabic that express these phenomena have come about as the result of grammaticalization and analogical processes that are common cross-linguistically.
