NOTA BENE: This art book will look best on a regular-sized tablet. It can, of course, be read on a phone but it will be difficult to zoom in and see the pictures on a small screen. The French painter Henri Le Sidaner (1862–1939) chose to spend most of his life in quiet isolation, away from both Paris and the polemics of his day. He used small, distinct brushstrokes and his canvases have a luminous, almost mystical quality, but he was neither a Pointillist nor a Symbolist. When asked which school he belonged to, he replied: "None. But if you absolutely insist on categorizing me, I am an Intimist." This biography is the sole contemporary account of Le Sidaner's career and now, after more than ninety years, it has finally been translated into English. Camille Mauclair discusses the artist's youth, influences, technique, choice of subjects, as well as his particular attachment to the village of Gerberoy.

Henri Le Sidaner
Author: Henri Le Sidaner
Publisher: Deutscher Kunstverlag
ISBN: 9783422022133
Category : Impressionism (Art)
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Henri Le Sidaner (1862-1939), an important French artist, has been forgotten for a long time. Unjustly, as he created his own independent and refined style. The impressionists coloring and subtle translucency give his works a fine poesy hidden magic. He influenced with his uncommon style many of the late impressionists and young painters in search for a personal sight on things. The Chemnitz Art Collections are hosting the first one man-exhibition in Europe of the magical Impressionist Henri le Sidaner since more than 40 years. This beautifully illustrated monograph catalogue is enriched by a biography written by Yann Farinaux-Le Sidaner, the artist's great-grandson.

The Artist's Garden
Author: Jackie Bennett
Publisher: White Lion Publishing
ISBN: 1781318743
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 227
Book Description
The Artist’s Garden will feature up to 20 gardens that have inspired and been home to some of the greatest painters of history. These gardens not only supplied the inspiration for creative works but also illuminate the professional motivation and private life of the artists themselves – from Cezanne’s house in the south of France to Childe Hassam at Celia Thaxter’s garden off the coast off Maine. Flowers and gardens have often been the first choice for artists looking for a subject. A garden close to the artist’s studio is not only convenient for daily material and ideas, but also has the advantage of changing through the seasons and over time. Claude Monet’s Giverny was the catalyst for hundreds of great paintings (by Monet and other artists), each one different from the one before. Sometimes a whole village becomes the focus for a colony of artists as at Gerberoy in Picardy and Skagen on the northernmost tip of Denmark. This book is about the real homes and gardens that inspired these great artists – gardens that can still be visited today. The relationship between artist and garden is a complex one. A few artists, including Pierre Bonnard and his neighbour Monet were keen gardeners, as much in love with their plants as their work, while for others like Sorolla in Madrid, his courtyard home was both a sanctuary and a source of ideas.
