"La Loi sur la protection du consommateur régit les contrats passés entre un consommateur et un commerçant. Notamment, elle encadre la présentation et le contenu de ces contrats, leur mode de conclusion, et prévoit les garanties qui y sont attachées. Elle impose, le cas échéant, un rétablissement de l'équilibre des forces en présence, par souci d'équité et de justice naturelle. La Loi sur la protection du consommateur impose aussi aux commerçants un code de conduite rigoureux, qui les oblige à faire preuve de transparence et de loyauté envers leurs clients consommateurs. Sans passer en revue chacun de ses articles au peigne fin, il est important de bien connaître non seulement la lettre, mais aussi l'esprit de cette loi d'ordre public à laquelle il ne peut être dérogé. La Loi sur la protection du consommateur réglemente ainsi une activité commerciale de premier rang dans notre économie : celle du commerce de détail, de la vente de biens et de services de consommation. Bien que la Loi sur la protection du consommateur confère plusieurs droits aux consommateurs, ces droits peuvent avoir certaines limites, lorsque l'équilibre tant souhaité par le législateur a pu être atteint. Ces limites sont importantes aux yeux des commerçants qui ne doivent pas être liés par une loi trop sévère qui les empêcherait d'exploiter leur entreprise.
