La prévention ainsi que le traitement précoce des lésions carieuses en denture temporaire puis en denture permanente sont importants pour le maintien d'une bonne santé bucco-dentaire. En effet, 20% des enfants, toutes tranches d'âge confondues regroupent l'ensemble des caries, ce qui constitue un enjeu majeur en odontologie pédiatrique. L'évolution dans le domaine des biomatériaux de restauration (ciment de verre ionomère, CVImar, compomère) a permis une plus grande préservation des tissus minéralisés par rapport aux anciennes techniques. Ceci a contribué à développer des approches thérapeutiques moins invasives en s'appuyant sur le principe d'économie tissulaire comme par exemple les techniques de restaurations appelées Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) et Interim Therapeutic Restorations (ITR).(2) De plus, dans certaines situations cliniques l'utilisation de vernis contenant du fluorure diamine d'argent pourrait également constituer une alternative de temporisation ou un complément aux ciments verres ionomères. En effet, des facteurs intrinsèques comme extrinsèques au patient ne permettent pas toujours le respect du protocole de collage nécessaire à des restaurations adhésives conventionnelles. Ces matériaux présentent donc une solution de temporisation à court et moyen terme. (3) Cette revue de la littérature permet de faire la synthèse sur les différents matériaux mis à disposition sur le marché et présente leurs compositions chimiques, leurs propriétés physico-chimiques. Secondairement, nous préciserons les indications actuelles en odontologie pédiatrique. Il s'agira également de discuter des avantages et inconvénients de ces biomatériaux, ainsi que de les comparer les uns aux autres, dans le contexte spécifique des soins dentaires pédiatriques en intégrant notamment les particularités de la dent temporaire et la coopération limitée au fauteuil de l'enfant.

Les laboratoires proposent actuellement une multitude de matériaux de restauration et il est difficile de se repérer parmi l'offre et tous ne sont pas forcément adaptés aux dents temporaires et/ou permanentes immatures au niveau histologique. Cet ouvrage permet donc de comprendre quels sont les matériaux les plus adaptés aux dents temporaires et permanentes immatures, pourquoi et dans quel cas les utiliser. Les dents temporaires à distance de leur exfoliation nécessitent une restauration pérenne dans le temps : les composites hybrides utilisés avec un système adhésif M&R3 restent la référence, il en est de même pour les dents permanentes immatures. Les dents temporaires proches de leur exfoliation pourront plutôt bénéficier de matériaux avec propriétés bioactives même si leur longévité est inférieure tels que les CVI ou plus récemment, la Biodentine, qui est un matériau très prometteur.
