Book Description
The dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, who ruled the Dominican Republic from 1930 until his assassination in 1961, was one of the longest and bloodiest in Latin American history. The Dictator’s Seduction is a cultural history of the Trujillo regime as it was experienced in the capital city of Santo Domingo. Focusing on everyday forms of state domination, Lauren Derby describes how the regime infiltrated civil society by fashioning a “vernacular politics” based on popular idioms of masculinity and fantasies of race and class mobility. Derby argues that the most pernicious aspect of the dictatorship was how it appropriated quotidian practices such as gossip and gift exchange, leaving almost no place for Dominicans to hide or resist. Drawing on previously untapped documents in the Trujillo National Archives and interviews with Dominicans who recall life under the dictator, Derby emphasizes the role that public ritual played in Trujillo’s exercise of power. His regime included the people in affairs of state on a massive scale as never before. Derby pays particular attention to how events and projects were received by the public as she analyzes parades and rallies, the rebuilding of Santo Domingo following a major hurricane, and the staging of a year-long celebration marking the twenty-fifth year of Trujillo’s regime. She looks at representations of Trujillo, exploring how claims that he embodied the popular barrio antihero the tíguere (tiger) stoked a fantasy of upward mobility and how a rumor that he had a personal guardian angel suggested he was uniquely protected from his enemies. The Dictator’s Seduction sheds new light on the cultural contrivances of autocratic power.

Book Description
Film itself is an artifact of memory. A blend of all the other fine arts, film portrays and preserves human memory, someone's memory, faulty or not, dramatically or comically, in a documentary, feature film or short. Hollywood may dominate 80 percent of cinema production but it is not the only voice. World cinema is about those other voices. Drawn initially from presentations from a series of film conferences held at the University of Texas at San Antonio, this collection of essays covers multiple geographical, linguistic, and cultural areas worldwide, emphasizing the historical and cultural interpretation of films. Appendices list films focusing on memory and invite readers to explore the films and issues raised.

Book Description
There are so many other Christmas curriculums for kids. Why do we need another one? Great Question! There is so much more to the Christmas story than most children ever hear about. The power of the story lies in understanding the backdrop of bringing mankind to that unique moment in God's timetable-the birth of Jesus.Too often adults assume children cannot understand or do not care about things like the prophecies behind the story, or the meanings of the wise men's gifts. We just assume all they are capable of handling is the surface details - the basic story itself. We wanted to give children as much of the details as possible, for one big reason-to help them realize the profound prophetic, fascinating truths that resulted in the birth of Christ. We want them to walk away from these lessons knowing that Christ's birth was not an accident, not coincidence, and not just a good story. We want them to see that it was proof that God's Word was real, and can be trusted. We want them to understand Jesus' birth was a part of God's bigger plan for mankind, and was an intricate part of His top secret Plan of Salvation. It's important they are able to tie what the Old Testament prophets had to say to the details, to show how well-planned it really was. All of this is to deepen their faith in their God, His son, and the book we call the Bible.5 Unique Prophetic Lessons!Lesson 1: Understanding Why He CameLesson 2: Understanding Who He WasLesson 3: Understanding the PropheciesLesson 4: Understanding His Birth LessonLesson 5: Understanding the Wise Men's GiftsIncluded is a Special Christmas Play!Bonus Packet of Lesson AidsMultiple Object Lessons Ideas

Book Description
The mythological, folkloric, and religious beliefs of Western culture have resulted in a long and ongoing history of esoteric themes in theatre from the Middle Ages to the present in Spain and the America. Now Robert Lima, a noted comparatist, brings to bear on this material his wide knowledge of the world of the occult. Lima defines the terms "occult" and "occultism" broadly to embrace the many ways in which humans have sought to fathom a secret knowledge held to be accessible only through such supernatural agencies as alchemy, angelology, asceticism, astrology, demonolatry, divination, ecstasy, magic, necromancy, possession, Santeria, séances, voudoun, and witchcraft. The dramatic works covered range from medieval materializations of Hell to the Golden Age plays of Lope de vega, Tirso de Molina, and Calderón de la Barca, to modern stage works by Valle-Inclán, García Lorca, Casona, Miras, and a number of significant Afro-Brazilian and Caribbean dramatists. The concluding comprehensive bibliography of the drama of the occult is invaluable.

Book Description
Research shows that by the time many children are thirteen years old they feel they know everything there is to know about the Bible and God, and feel no further need of attending church. Could this be because we have underestimated their spiritual potential, and been content to feed them a repetitive spiritual diet of basic Bible stories over and over again? Just how many ways can we repackage Noah's Ark anyway? It's time the collective body of Christ re-evaluate children's ministries and redefine what valid, disciple-making, equipping children's ministry really is.
