Book Description
Excerpt from Laboratory Methods for the Experimental Study of Immunity It is presumed that the student undertaking work in an advanced subject of this nature has had an elementary training in chemistry, general biology, bacteriology and pathology. It is imperative that the student be familiar with the ordinary technique in the handling of pathogenic micro - organisms and the care of inoculated animals. The experiments outlined are those which have proved by experience to be the most serviceable in the illustration of the points under discussion in the lecture course which accompanies the experimental work. The experiments out lined comprise one year's work. For suggestions in regard to the presentation of this outline the writer is indebted to Professor H. T. Ricketts of the University of Chicago. Book Description
Excerpt from Biological Laboratory Methods In the preparation of this book the author has also been guided by what seemed to be the average advancement Of the students who report from year to year for admission to the scientific courses in the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. The topics treated in the following pages have not been greatly elaborated, but the discussions have been conducted far enough to give something more than simply suggestions and outlines. It is expected that the student will build only the foundation in the study Of this book, but it is hoped by the author that the information contained herein will be the incentive for inducing the student to extend his investigations in the domain Of bio logical science until he becomes proficient in research and is able to contribute to the knowledge of the subject. In writing this book liberal use has been made Of the stand ard works relating to microscopy and to histology, and much valuable information has been secured from the papers and periodicals devoted to the science of biology. The following firms have placed the author under Obliga tions for permission to use electroplates from which some of the illustrations have been produced: Bausch Lomb Opti cal Company; Carl Zeiss Company; Eastman Kodak Com pany; Buffalo Dental Manufacturing Company; and Rochester Optical Company. Book Description
The effective design of scientific experiments is critical to success, yet graduate students receive very little formal training in how to do it. Based on a well-received course taught by the author, Experimental Design for Biologistsfills this gap. Experimental Design for Biologistsexplains how to establish the framework for an experimental project, how to set up a system, design experiments within that system, and how to determine and use the correct set of controls. Separate chapters are devoted to negative controls, positive controls, and other categories of controls that are perhaps less recognized, such as “assumption controls†and “experimentalist controls†. Furthermore, there are sections on establishing the experimental system, which include performing critical “system controls†. Should all experimental plans be hypothesis-driven? Is a question/answer approach more appropriate? What was the hypothesis behind the Human Genome Project? What color is the sky? How does one get to Carnegie Hall? The answers to these kinds of questions can be found in Experimental Design for Biologists. Written in an engaging manner, the book provides compelling lessons in framing an experimental question, establishing a validated system to answer the question, and deriving verifiable models from experimental data. Experimental Design for Biologistsis an essential source of theory and practical guidance in designing a research plan.

Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in Immunity When Behring's great discovery of antitoxin Opened new paths for the study of immunity it was at once clear that further progress could be attempted in two ways. The first of these, having practical therapeutic results in mind, consists in bending all efforts to the pro duction of various individual curative sera. The other method con sists in seeking a deeper insight into the nature of immunity phe momena, and discovering the general principles underlying the same, for these in turn will aid practical progress. Book Description
Excerpt from Medical Laboratory Methods and Tests T his volume has been written in response to repeated complaints that there was no small book dealing with the chemical and microscopical tests and investigations which are most useful to medical men. The object has been to detail the commoner methods, pointing out the conclusions which may be drawn from the various tests, but laying stress upon the fallacies to which each is liable. The book deals, not with the examination of patients, but with that of fluids or sub stances obtained from them, and bedside methods have been excluded. It is intended to be a small handbook for the medical laboratory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Clinical Laboratory Methods In offering this manual for the use of students and practitioners, the object is to present clinical laboratory methods in concise and accessible form. While devoted largely to a description of methods, the underlying principles, the indications for performing tests and the significance of the results are outlined. Accordingly the plan adopted in most chapters has been as follows: (1) Outline of routine examinations; (2) description of the simpler qualitative methods which are frequently employed; (3) description of quantitative methods or those of intricate technic; (4) discussion of findings in various morbid conditions. When several methods are given, usually the preferred one is indicated. Details are entered into more fully in some cases than in others. For example, the method of counting blood cells has been given meticulously, since it is elementary and its procedures are among the first which must be mastered by the student. It may seem that disproportionate attention has been given to certain subjects, such as the histology and pathology of the blood, but experience in teaching has shown this to be desirable. It is hoped that both the liberal use of cross references in the body of the text and the synoptic resumes of quantitative procedures in the chapters on Blood and Urine, will facilitate use of the book in the clinical laboratory. The bibliography, which will be found at the end of the text, contains references to original articles on the newer methods, and will prove helpful to readers desiring to consult the literature. The standard works to which reference is made, have been used freely. I desire to express my thanks to many of my Cleveland colleagues who read portions of the manuscript and made valuable suggestions, particularly to Drs. Henry L. Sanford, Harvey A. Berkes, J. Edgar McClelland, Harold N. Cole, Richard Dexter and Carl F. Ulrich and to Dr. Henry Schroeder of New York City for his advice regarding the relation of urinary examinations to life insurance. Book Description
Excerpt from Immunity, Methods of Diagnosis and Therapy and Their Practical Application This book is to serve a purely practical purpose. The methods of serum diagnosis, on account of their growing clinical significance, are constantly stimulating greater interest in all branches of medical science. While giving instruction in this subject, I realized that it would be of great help to both the medical student and physician if they possessed a short text-book which - would review in a purely critical form the various methods of immunity diagnosis, especially those relating to tuberculosis and Syphilis.
