Book Description
Excerpt from Materials of Construction, Their Manufacture and Properties The subject of testing materials has not been covered, except in so far as methods of testing are inseparable from discussions of the properties of materials revealed by laboratory tests. It is the author's conviction that this subject can be handled only in the laboratory itself, and the place for such material is therefore in a laboratory manual. It is assumed, however, that a laboratory course in testing materials will invariably parallel and supplement the text-book course in the study of materials. Book Description
Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Physical Chemistry In view of the fact that there are, as a rule, available for laboratory work' not more than two and one-half hours at a time, it has been found desirable to have the different pieces of apparatus set up beforehand by the instructor. To this end, each experiment is preceded by an exact list of the appa ratus and chemicals needed. It is believed that this will materi ally aid the instructor in assembling the necessary equipment. At the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the laboratory course immediately follows the completion of the theoretical course in physical chemistry, and students are thus prepared to take up the study of any experiment herein listed. It is therefore found practical to prepare the equipment for one or two units of each exercise before the laboratory course starts, and to shift the student successively from one experiment to another. In this way, an excessive amount of preparatory work is avoided. Many of the experiments have been in use in their present form at this Institute, and elsewhere, for a number of years, and have been found to be thoroughly satisfactory. Book Description
Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual This manual has been adapted particularly to the present equipment and requirements of a course in experimental physics in Harvard College known as Physics C. This course is accompanied by a series of illustrated lectures to the class as a whole, two each Week, and one hour each week of recitation and problem work to the class in small sections. A knowledge of algebra and plane geometry, and a slight acquaintance with the notation of trigonometry are necessary. Familiarity with the use of logarithms or the slide rule is strongly recommended for reducing the labor of computation. The course should properly be preceded by a more elementary course in physics. Small type has been used for a few descriptive and explanatory sections of the text which are not immediate parts of the specific directions of the experiments. The small type does not, however, signify relative unimportance of the material. Introductory remarks setting forth the application of the principles involved precede each experiment or each group of experiments involving the same principles. In writing this manual, some material, for which much indebtedness is expressed, has been freely taken from Professor Sabine's Laboratory Course in Physical Measurements. For two reasons a revision of this book has become necessary. The distribution of time in Physics C has been so altered that the laboratory work now occupies a shorter time than formerly, and the exercises have therefore become unduly long. It is also desirable to include a wider variety of experiments in the manual, so as to fit the somewhat different needs of the various classes of students who use it. In the course of the revision many experiments have been altered, where experience has shown this to be advantageous, or on account of changes in the apparatus. Book Description
Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual for Work in General Science Laboratory work and the experiences of home and school furnish an important basis for the course in general science. The following outlines for experiments and demonstrations have been developed so as to include the exercises which have proved most valuable for use in the first year of the high school. The outlines are the result of the cooperative work of several high-school teachers through a period of years, and have been tried with more than a thousand pupils. Experiments other than those here included have been tried, but through constant trial, elimination, and addition the work has assumed its present form. It is the purpose of the outlines to direct the pupils into the habit of finding out about many kinds of common problems in science. To do this in the best way common materials are used for experi mentation, since common and simple phenomena are likely to be more educative for young pupils than those which are uncommon and complex. The materials needed are listed in connection with each exercise. It is hoped that teachers will encourage pupils to use their own initiative in devising new ways to perform the experiments, as well as in working out additional problems which are sure to be suggested in the discussion of the experiments here outlined. At the close of the directions for work, one or more additional problems are suggested, and the use of these as topics for discussion will make the work more valuable. The exercises have been planned so that each one requires a shorter period of continuous atten tion than is usually true in the more advanced laboratory work in high-school science. Experience has shown that first-year pupils work more effectively when the units of work assigned are relatively short and definite. This plan results in a larger number of exercises than would be used in a more advanced course inscience. In many cases, however, two or more exercises may be performed in a single laboratory period. Supplementary or alternative experiments, which sometimes require more complex apparatus, are often given. These supplementary experiments are indicated by the same arabic number as the preceding experiment, but with a letter added. Thus 22a is an experiment which may be used in addition to or instead of Exercise 22. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
