Book Description
A technical reference guide and instruction text for the estimation of flood and drainage water levels in rivers, waterways and drainage channels. It is written as a user’s manual for the openly available innovative Conveyance and Afflux Estimation System (CES-AES) software, with which water levels, flows and velocities in channels can be calculated. The impact of factors influencing these levels and the sensitivity of channels to extreme levels can also be assessed. Approaches and solutions are focused on addressing environmental, flood risk and land drainage objectives. Practical Channel Hydraulics is the first reference guide that focuses in detail on estimating roughness, conveyance and afflux in fluvial hydraulics. With its universal approach and the application of metric units, both book and software serve an international audience of consultants and engineers dealing with river modelling, flood risk assessment, maintenance of watercourses and the design of drainage systems. Suited as course material for training graduate Master’s students in civil and environmental engineering or geomorphology who focus on river and flood engineering, as well as for professional training in flood risk management issues, open channel flow hydraulics and modelling. The CES-AES software development followed recommendations by practitioners and academics in the UK Network on Conveyance in River Flood Plain Systems, following the Autumn 2000 floods, that operating authorities should make better use of recent improved knowledge on conveyance and related flood (or drainage) level estimation. This led to a Targeted Programme of Research aimed at improving conveyance estimation and subsequent integration with other research on afflux at bridges and culverts at high flows. The CES-AES software tool aims to improve and assist with the estimation of: hydraulic roughness water levels (and corresponding channel and structure conveyance) flow (given slope); section-average and spatial velocities backwater profiles upstream of a known flow-head control e.g. weir (steady) afflux upstream of bridges and culverts uncertainty in water level The CES-AES software and tutorial are openly available at www.river-conveyance.net (see also Downloads & Updates tab).

Book Description
Literally an entire course between two covers, Measurement Uncertainty: Methods and Applications, Fourth Edition, presents engineering students with a comprehensive tutorial of measurement uncertainty methods in a logically categorized and readily utilized format. The new uncertainty technologies embodied in both U.S. and international standards have been incorporated into this text with a view toward understanding the strengths and weaknesses of both. The book is designed to also serve as a practical desk reference in situations that commonly confront an experimenter. The text presents the basics of the measurement uncertainty model, non-symmetrical systematic standard uncertainties, random standard uncertainties, the use of correlation, curve-fitting problems, and probability plotting, combining results from different test methods, calibration errors, and uncertainty propagation for both independent and dependent error sources. The author draws on years of experience in industry to direct special attention to the problem of developing confidence in uncertainty analysis results and using measurement uncertainty to select instrumentation systems.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive demonstration of risk analysis as a distinct science covering risk understanding, assessment, perception, communication, management, governance and policy. It presents and discusses the key pillars of this science, and provides guidance on how to conduct high-quality risk analysis. The Science of Risk Analysis seeks to strengthen risk analysis as a field and science by summarizing and extending current work on the topic. It presents the foundation for a distinct risk field and science based on recent research, and explains the difference between applied risk analysis (to provide risk knowledge and tackle risk problems in relation to for example medicine, engineering, business or climate change) and generic risk analysis (on concepts, theories, frameworks, approaches, principles, methods and models to understand, assess, characterise, communicate, manage and govern risk). The book clarifies and describes key risk science concepts, and builds on recent foundational work conducted by the Society for Risk Analysis in order to provide new perspectives on science and risk analysis. The topics covered are accompanied by cases and examples relating to current issues throughout. This book is essential reading for risk analysis professionals, scientists, students and practitioners, and will also be of interest to scientists and practitioners from other fields who apply risk analysis in their work.

Book Description
Metrological traceability of chemical measurement results means the establishment of a relation to metrological stated references through an unbroken chain of comparisons. This volume collects 56 outstanding papers on the topic, mostly published in the period 2000-2003 in the journal "Accreditation and Quality Assurance". They provide the latest understanding, and possibly the rationale why it is important to integrate the concept of metrological traceability including suitable measurement standards such as certified reference materials, into the standard measurement procedures of every analytical laboratory. In addition, this anthology considers the benefits to both the analytical laboratory and the user of the measurement results.

Book Description
Those tasked with the planning and construction of infrastructure and development operations face an increasingly uncertain context in which they must address risks across a number of different fields. These range from the environmental and archaeological to the social, political and financial. As a consequence, the formal and informal practices of stakeholders often incorporate projections of risk and opportunity. Project Risks analyzes this paradigm shift. It reviews the origin and nature of these uncertainties, and the practices implemented by the actors to mitigate or take advantage of them. Paradoxically, these practices generate new risks and power relations that are not compatible with the collaborative planning model. These paradoxes force the rethinking of practices such as project territorialization, risk taking in planning and the responsibility of actors, as well as the societal and political choices that must be made between the realization of projects and the protection of the environment.
