Book Description
This volume was designed as a text for medical students, house officers, and even clinicians. It deals with the most common problems in nephrology, providing new insight into how to improve clinical skills. A comprehensive overview of renal physiology and electrolyte disorders lays the groundwork for a clear presentation of the pathophysiological principles that underlie these disorders and a step-by-step presentation of the mechanisms behind the signs and symptoms of kidney failure. The origins of this book can be traced to the teaching of a Renal Pathophysiology course at the Washington University School of Medicine, beginning in the mid-1960s. When changes in the medical school curriculum took place in the early 1970s, an effort was made to synthesize the minimum core curriculum for sophomore medical students, and the distillation of "essential material" to be covered in the area of renal pathophysiology led to the development of the first edition of a renal syllabus. This syllabus has been used in our department since 1974, and, following some of the recommendations and critiques of students and faculty, it has been entirely reworked many times to improve its effectiveness and value. This book is a direct extension of that syllabus, integrated with contri butions from faculty members in our Renal Division, and expanded to include a section on therapy in most chapters. It is our hope that this format will serve the needs of not only sophomore and senior medical students, but also house officers, nephrology fellows, and clinicians.

Book Description
Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 11: Kidney and Body Fluids offers a thorough discussion of the experiments, research, and investigations done on the function, composition, and chemical reactions the kidney and body fluids undergo. Divided into 10 parts and having 88 chapters, the book features lengthy literature of authors who have actively pursued research on kidney and body fluids. Areas covered include renal cell cultures and blood flow; glomerulotubular balance; cell ionic activity and element analysis; electrophysiology and epithelial transport; and tubular handling of phosphate and calcium. Tubular acidification, regulation of water balance, and extracellular volume control are also discussed. The text presents as well how the study of the kidney and body fluids have captured the interest of physiologists and other individuals interested in this discipline. The book is a dependable source of information for those interested in the composition, function, and chemical reactions of the kidney and body fluids. The text is highly recommended to scholars and students who find this field of study interesting.

Book Description
This little book was assembled from the authors' lectures to medical students and was originally published as one volume in the series Human Physiology, edited by O. H. Gauer, K. Kramer, and R. Jung. The editors intended that each volume in this series be independent of the others and we have kept to this purpose. We have included here only material that we feel is necessary for medical students to know in order to understand kidney function in health and, by later extrapolation, in disease. The contents rest on accepted principles estab lished by experiments, and little space is given to what is controversial, hypo thetical, or unresolved. We are pleased that Dr. Coxon has been motivated to prepare an English language version of this text. We hope that it will serve as a ready reference and review source for the beleaguered medical student. P. Deetjen J. W. Boylan K.

Book Description
Learn how to accurately analyze urine and body fluids with Fundamentals of Urine and Body Fluid Analysis, 5th Edition. Known for its clear writing style, logical organization, and vivid full-color illustrations, this renowned text offers the perfect level and depth of information for understanding the fundamental principles of urine and body fluids frequently encountered in the clinical laboratory. This includes the collection and analysis of urine, fecal specimens, vaginal secretions, and other body fluids such as cerebrospinal, synovial, seminal, amniotic, pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal fluids. Author Nancy Brunzel also shares her extensive knowledge and expertise in the field as she highlights key information and walks you through essential techniques and procedures — showing you how to correlate data with your knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology in order to understand pathologic processes. - Study questions and case studies in each chapter reinforce comprehension and application, with an answer key located in the back of the book. - UNIQUE! Table of crystal images based on shape serves as a single, comprehensive guide to the identification of crystals in urine sediment. - UNIQUE! Image Gallery of Urine Sediment provides alternate views of sediment components to augment the numerous classic photomicrographs already present in the Microscopic Examination of Urine chapter. - UNIQUE! Quick Guides to urine and body fluid photomicrographs make it fast and easy to find a photo of a specific cell type or component of interest. - UNIQUE! Tables with high quality polarizing microscopy photomicrographs demonstrate the differences in birefringent intensity of substances with and without a red compensator. - The most complete collection of high-quality, full-color images enables optimal identification of microscopic components in urine and other body fluids. - NEW!
