Keeping the Wild
Author: George Wuerthner
Publisher: Foundations for Deep Ecology 3
ISBN: 9781610915588
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Is it time to embrace the so-called “Anthropocene”—the age of human dominion—and to abandon tried-and-true conservation tools such as parks and wilderness areas? Is the future of Earth to be fully domesticated, an engineered global garden managed by technocrats to serve humanity? The schism between advocates of rewilding and those who accept and even celebrate a “post-wild” world is arguably the hottest intellectual battle in contemporary conservation. In Keeping the Wild, a group of prominent scientists, writers, and conservation activists responds to the Anthropocene-boosters who claim that wild nature is no more (or in any case not much worth caring about), that human-caused extinction is acceptable, and that “novel ecosystems” are an adequate replacement for natural landscapes. With rhetorical fists swinging, the book’s contributors argue that these “new environmentalists” embody the hubris of the managerial mindset and offer a conservation strategy that will fail to protect life in all its buzzing, blossoming diversity. With essays from Eileen Crist, David Ehrenfeld, Dave Foreman, Lisi Krall, Harvey Locke, Curt Meine, Kathleen Dean Moore, Michael Soulé, Terry Tempest Williams and other leading thinkers, Keeping the Wild provides an introduction to this important debate, a critique of the Anthropocene boosters’ attack on traditional conservation, and unapologetic advocacy for wild nature.

Wild Souls
Author: Emma Marris
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 163557496X
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 353
Book Description
Winner of the 2022 Rachel Carson Environment Book Award * Winner of the 2022 Science in Society Journalism Award (Books) * Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize “Thoughtful, insightful, and wise, Wild Souls is a landmark work.”--Ed Yong, author of An Immense World "Fascinating . . . hands-on philosophy, put to test in the real world . . . Marris believes that our idea of wildness--our obsession with purity--is misguided. No animal remains untouched by human hands . . . the science isn't the hard part. The real challenge is the ethics, the act of imagining our appropriate place in that world." --Outside Magazine From an acclaimed environmental writer, a groundbreaking and provocative new vision for our relationships with--and responsibilities toward--the planet's wild animals. Protecting wild animals and preserving the environment are two ideals so seemingly compatible as to be almost inseparable. But in fact, between animal welfare and conservation science there exists a space of underexamined and unresolved tension: wildness itself. When is it right to capture or feed wild animals for the good of their species? How do we balance the rights of introduced species with those already established within an ecosystem? Can hunting be ecological? Are any animals truly wild on a planet that humans have so thoroughly changed? No clear guidelines yet exist to help us resolve such questions. Transporting readers into the field with scientists tackling these profound challenges, Emma Marris tells the affecting and inspiring stories of animals around the globe--from Peruvian monkeys to Australian bilbies, rare Hawai'ian birds to majestic Oregon wolves. And she offers a companionable tour of the philosophical ideas that may steer our search for sustainability and justice in the non-human world. Revealing just how intertwined animal life and human life really are, Wild Souls will change the way we think about nature-and our place within it.

Afoot and Delighthearted
Author: Samuel Whittemore Fowler, Dr
Publisher: Xulon Press
ISBN: 1612153488
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 344
Book Description
Afoot and Delighthearted is a delightful book of poetry. The author, Dr. Samuel Whittemore Fowler, had a deep love of nature, spending many hours hiking on trails in his beloved woodlands. I have included in this book some of his other works, all of which are symphonic poems (mostly 14 lines to a stanza but occasionally there are some variations to this pattern): Song of the Quiet Outsider, Song of the Sunwet Seraphim, and Song of Euphoria. In Song of the Quiet Outsider, the author attempts to show his readers that we need sublimity, withdrawal, and transcendence in this fast-paced world in which we live. In Song of the Sunwet Seraphim, the author examines man's innate capacity for effort, the joyful exertion and the organizational disposition which produces vigorous work. In Song of Euphoria, the author puts into poetic images the joy of being alive. BIOGRAPHY Samuel W. Fowler was born November 30, 1934, in Washington, D.C. He trusted Christ as his Savior October 12, 1954. He received his Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary and was professor of Bible and Theology for 43 years in several Bible colleges. His unique teaching and preaching style reached many students who are now serving the Lord around the world. He also served as interim pastor and full-time pastor in several churches. Dr. Fowler's previous works Coping Strategies and Meditations on the Glory of God have been a blessing to many Christians. Although Dr. Fowler's expertise was in Bible and Theology, he also had a deep love of nature, which inspired him to become a poet. These books are a collection of his poetic works written while enjoying nature and communing with the Lord whom he loved. Dr. Fowler went to be with the Lord on July 11, 2008.
