Book Description
This book traces the journey of popular Hindi cinema from 1913 to contemporary times when Bollywood has evolved as a part of India’s cultural diplomacy. Avoiding a linear, developmental narrative, the book re-examines the developments through the ruptures in the course of cinematic history. The essays in the volume critically consider transformations of the Hindi film industry from its early days to its present self-referential mode, issues of gender, dance and choreography, Bombay cinema’s negotiations with the changing cityscape and urbanisms, and concentrate on its multifarious regional, national and transnational implications in the 21st century. One of the most comprehensive volumes on Bollywood, this work presents an analytical overview of the multiple histories of popular cinema in India and will be useful to scholars and researchers interested in film and media studies, South Asian popular culture and modern India, as well as to cinephiles and general readers alike.

Book Description
In the decades following India's opening to foreign capital, the city of Bangalore emerged, quite unexpectedly, as the outsourcing hub for the global technology industry and the aspirational global city of liberalizing India. Through an ethnography of English and Kannada print news media in Bangalore, this ambitious and innovative new study reveals how the expanding private news culture played a critical role in shaping urban transformation in India, when the allegedly public profession of journalism became both an object and agent of global urbanization. Building on extensive fieldwork carried out with the Times of India group, the largest media house in India, between 2008 and 2012, Sahana Udupa argues that the class project of the 'global city' news discourse came into striking conflict with the cultural logics of regional language and caste practices. Advancing new theoretical concepts, Making News in Global India takes arguments in media scholarship beyond the dichotomy of public good and private accumulation.

Book Description
It was a magnificent period after independence in 1947. We were living in independent India. Politically, India had become one nation after 3000 years. However, in a sense it always was one nation, culturally socially and philosophically. All the newly formed Indian states were vibrant with their programs of development after the states reorganized in 1956 based on the language spoken. What did Kannadigas do in the first golden period of 60 years after formation of linguistic states in India? (A person whose mother tongue is Kannada is called a Kannadiga). What did Kannadigas do for all round progress? Did they achieve anything, or did they waste these 60 golden years forever and forever? These will be big questions for future Karnataka historians. We Kannadigas have erred, very seriously indeed, by no trying to be progressive during the last 60 years. For example, now its 2017 AD of the 21st century, but still our business enterprise ability is stagnating at 1956 AD levels of 20th Century. Our construction enterprise is also stagnating at 1956 AD capabilities, unable to go vertically above ground plus 3 stories. Hardly we have one or two big name Kannadiga apartment builders in Bangalore. Any advanced linguistic society will have nearly twenty spheres of activity; but the Kannadiga society has left many of them unoccupied and dormant for the last 60 years, after the formation of Karnataka linguistic state. It is no wonder that the Kannadiga society is classified as Kahindha linguistic society.

Book Description
Singing the Goddess into Place examines Chamundi of the Hill, a collection of songs that tells the stories of the gods and goddesses of the region around the city of Mysore in southern Karnataka. The ballad actively transforms the region into a land where gods and goddesses live, embedding these deities within the social worlds of their devotees and remapping southern Karnataka into sacred geography connected through networks of devotion and pilgrimage. In this in-depth study of the songs and their context, Caleb Simmons not only provides the first English-language translation of these songs but brings to light the unstudied folk perspectives on the foundational myth of Mysore and its urban history. Singing the Goddess into Place demonstrates how folk narratives reflect local context while also actively working to upend social inequities based on caste and ritual/devotional practices. By delving into this world, the book helps us understand how a landscape is transformed through people's relationship with it and how this relationship helps build meaning for the communities that call it home.
