Julia Arthur Cheney, born Ida Lewis in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on May 3, 1869. The fifth of sixteen children, young Ida studied Shakespeare at home under her mothers guidance. By the age of eleven, Julia found herself leaving the comforts of her home traveling and performing all over the country on the American stage. She later left America for London to share the stage with, Sir Henry Irving to become one of the worlds most brilliant Shakespearian stage actresses of her time. Her stage career would span from the mid 1800s through the 1920s. At the height of her career, Julia Arthur left the stage for love and a home she had never known. Newly married to Benjamin P. Cheney Jr., he purchase an island in Outer Boston Harbor for his young bride and had a mansion built for her like no other. They lived a life full of love and luxury, until their world came crashing down around them. In 1917, the government seized their beautiful island and mansion for the Boston Harbor Defense and it was never returned to them.

By the late nineteenth century, Canadian women had begun forging careers as professional actresses, appearing not just in Canada, but in the United States, Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. They played an integral role in theatrical networks and helped shape transnational middle-class culture. Taking the approach of feminist collective biography, Sweet Canadian Girls Abroad writes the lives of women who, despite their renown during their lifetimes, have been all too easily forgotten. Cecilia Morgan examines these “sweet girls’” childhoods, their experiences of work, touring, and company management, the plays in which they appeared, and the celebrity they enjoyed. In so doing she shows how women helped convey messages about race, empire, and white identity in popular culture. Investigating a period from the 1870s to the 1940s, Morgan demonstrates how actresses evolved within a period of change in theatre, how they coped with new challenges, and how they brought their craft to new media. In this comprehensive study of women in vaudeville, Alison Kibler reveals how female performers, patrons, and workers shaped the rise and fall of the most popular live entertainment at the turn of the century. Kibler focuses on the role of gender in struggles over whether high or low culture would reign in vaudeville, examining women's performances and careers in vaudeville, their status in the expanding vaudeville audience, and their activity in the vaudevillians' labor union. Respectable women were a key to vaudeville's success, she says, as entrepreneurs drew women into audiences that had previously been dominated by working-class men and recruited female artists as performers. But although theater managers publicly celebrated the cultural uplift of vaudeville and its popularity among women, in reality their houses were often hostile both to female performers and to female patrons and home to women who challenged conventional understandings of respectable behavior. Once a sign of vaudeville's refinement, Kibler says, women became associated with the decay of vaudeville and were implicated in broader attacks on mass culture as well.

This book documents the life of August Reekast from Prussia, Christina (McKinnon) Reekast from Nova Scotia, and three generations of lives living on Calf, Outer, Middle and Great Brewster Islands in the Boston Harbor from 1891 to the 1940's. August Reekast was a very well know lobster fisherman who lived and worked his trade off Outer Brewster Island; also was a boat Captain for Julia Arthur. Ms. Arthur (an actress in the late 1800's to early 1900's) and her husband Benjamin P. Cheney were the owner's of Calf Island and a beautiful Mansion which overlooked the Harbor. In 1908 the Reekast family lost everything in the Chelsea Massachusetts Fire, having no other option, moved their eight children to the Islands where they rebuilt their lives. In the mid 1900's their son Gus Reekast became caretaker of Calf Island where he and his wife raised their daughter Augusta (Periwinkle). In the early 1920's the Reekast family relocated to N. Weymouth Mass., their home was located on Hunts Hill. During the depression, Ida (Reekast) Knoll and Edmund Knoll brought their two children Christine (knoll) Walsh and Rosemary (Knoll) Thibodeau to live on Great Brewster. The Reekast and Knoll family left a legacy of knowledge, pictures and documents which fill the pages of this book.
