Book Description
An illustrated history of the Queen’s Nursing institute in the United Kingdom, one of the oldest charitable nursing organizations. For 150 years, up and down the country, from large cities to rural areas and the remotest islands and highlands, district nurses have been visiting the sick in their own homes. Here they have provided healthcare, and given moral support and advice to people of all ages the length and breadth of Britain. Follow the story of how, in the 1860s, the Liverpool philanthropist William Rathbone VI set up an experiment in home nursing in his home city, aimed at providing care for the poor who had no access to proper medical attention. His scheme resulted in the establishment of district nursing as a profession, and the inauguration of the Queen Victoria Jubilee Institute for Nurses. Take a journey through the growth of the district nursing movement, of the expansion of services into school nursing and health visiting in 1891, through nursing and pastoral care during the First and Second World Wars, and learn how, periodically, the district nurse has provided maternity and midwifery services. This illustrated history of district nursing provides a unique insight into the role played by members of this branch of the nursing profession, and demonstrates how the nurses have been the backbone of the community, providing the public with a wide range of invaluable healthcare services.

Book Description
Ethics and the Good Nurse draws on internationally leading empirical research conducted by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues and explores nursing as a virtuous profession through a close examination of nurses’ character. With the belief that virtues such as kindness, integrity, compassion and honesty are core to the nursing profession, this book draws on extended insights from the Jubilee Centre’s Virtuous Practicing in Nursing study to understand the role of such virtues in the professional practice and education of nurses. This book brings together knowledge from academics, scholars and practitioners to address the influence of personal and professional character on nurses and nursing. By including clear implications for policy, practice and research, Ethics and the Good Nurse serves as essential reading for a wide audience, including nurses, policy makers and nursing organisations and provides a timely and much-needed contribution to the field of nursing and character education.

Book Description
Mismanaged by local authority, in the 19th-century, Dublin lacked sufficient industrial development to provide adequate employment. Dublin's charitable workers attempted to improve the lives of the thousands who flocked to the city in search of relief. As a means to examining the hidden incentives of charity, the author offers a discussion of the language of charity in this setting. She notes how contemporary notions of race, class, and religion influenced how Ireland's philanthropists thought of and related to the poor. While much has been written on the perceived racial inferiority of the Celt as compared to the Anglo-Saxon, Preston suggests that the Irish upper classes, in seeking to gain equal footing with the British elite, adopted the same language to describe the poor. Intense sectarian strife marred Irish charities and undermined the smooth operation of social services. Preston offers insight by focusing on two women philanthropists who battled for the souls of Ireland's children. She also explores those who remained above the fray, such as the Religious Society of Friends in Ireland, who offered aid to all regardless of creed. Within the charitable records of this group, Preston contends that one can see how the Society changed over time and that, in Ireland, the industrial revolution as well as the 1798 Rebellion, contributed to the Society adapting to the mainstream. Finally, the women of charity helped to establish a modern nursing system for Ireland, and this work details their efforts at turning nursing into a respectable profession for women.
