Book Description
In 1986, Charles Nicholl travels through Thailand to learn about the spiritual traditions of forest Buddhism in the north of the country. But interesting things have a habit of getting in the way. When Nicholl meets Harry, an old French Indochina hand, on the night train north with his tales of Kachin jade and Shan opium, it leads to a journey along the banks of the Mekong, into the Golden Triangle, and then across the border into Burma, in the company of the book's Thai heroine, Kitai.Often alarming but also sensual, it is beautifully told and a reminder that adventures still exist - among shaman spirit-summoners, in rebel hideouts, or in opium dens - for those prepared to cross borders, real, imaginary, or imposed.

Book Description
This is the story of what happens when the author's plans to ordain as a Buddhist monk in Thailand are derailed after he has arrived in the country. Next Life in the Afternoon is spiritual, funny, at times irreverent, and full of personal lessons learned along the way. I'm squatting naked on a concrete floor in the predawn coolness of Udon Thani, pouring water from a washbasin onto my head to rinse off the bar soap I used as shampoo. My hair is long and stringy. I had counted on it being shaved off by now, so I had let it grow out a bit leading up to the trip. It's about fifty-five degrees, and I am trying to be as quiet as possible so as not to wake the monks and my traveling companions. The splish-splosh of water is punctuated by my sharp, pronounced inhaling, a result of being doused with such breathtakingly cool water. My toes tingle against the cold floor, and I am momentarily brought back to Boston, where my trip began. It seems to be a different planet, almost, although the air and water hold a familiar chill. A week into the trip, I still haven't acclimated to everything, and I am stuck somewhere between amazement and culture shock. My mind tries to escape like the cool sudsy water that pools at my feet. The sun is nearly on the horizon, and the temple is coming alive with slow-moving footsteps along the rainy paths outside. I should get going. The morning alms rounds have begun, and I hear familiar voices muffled outside the door. I can't make out many words, but hear one that is familiar: Farang. A half-derogatory Thai word for “foreigner” and the name I have in this country that keeps me at arm's length. -From Next Life in the Afternoon: A Journey Through Thailand What's with the name? “Next life in the afternoon” is a translation of the Thai idiom “Chat na bai bai.” It's a lightly humorous expression of frustration in plans not working out as intended. This seemed to be an apt title, since the author was not able to become a monk. It also ties in the concepts of reincarnation and impermanence, which are key in Buddhist belief and thus Thai culture.

Book Description
This book is compiled from a diary I kept during my most recent visit to Thailand with my youngest son James. He is twenty five years old and I, well I'm a bit older than that, as you might expect. We get on very well together though, as you'll see and had many adventures on our holiday in The Land Of Smiles. Journey with us from our departure airport in Newcastle through Dubai and on to Bangkok, then by train to the ancient former capital of Sukhothai, before flying down to the islands of the Gulf and finally a fast catamaran trip to Cha Am.Ponder with us as we go, some of life's great mysteries:How is it possible to take multiple routes through an airport and still reach the same destination? Why do Thais on motorbikes wear their clothes back to front?A unique Thai approach to encouraging the workforce and improving industrial relations on building sites. Why you need to board the bus before the French get there. How to hide your drink problem in Thailand. Why don't more airports have zebra crossings? Is there a Monty Python sketch for every eventuality?Which animals make the best weather forecasters?Do all egg thieves have handlebar mustaches?Where did Tarzan go, was he evicted? How hard can it be to get a bowl of soup? Why you should always check the toilet bowl before you sit or stand there, waving anything around.Corruption...is it always black and white?Boris and Burkas....what are the issues? Why bigger bikes just mean bigger accidents.Such were some of the issues we faced and questions we asked during our journey across The Land Of Smiles. The answers we came up with comprise what is almost certainly one of the least important literary works of the modern age.
