Book Description
As the European Commission's science and knowledge service, the JRC provides independent scientific advice and support to EU policy, in order to tackle the interlinked and complex challenges faced by our society. The European Commission has set its ambition high in how Europe should respond to planetary challenges, climate change and ecosystem degradation, the digital acceleration, changing demographics, shifting human geography and the future of work, all against a rapidly evolving geopolitical context. Europe needs to build its own resilience, and to do so at a time when we are recovering from the effects of a global pandemic. Operating at the interface between science and policy, the JRC wants to strengthen its capacity to be a key partner in helping to identify solutions to such challenges. In our 2021-2022 Work Programme, we support all Commission's political priorities and most initiatives included in the Commission 2021 work programme and contribute to the implementation of the Horizon Europe and Euratom research and training programme.

Book Description
The JRC work programme 2023-2024 focuses on prioritisation, the core strengths of the JRC - anticipation, integration and impact of EU policies, and scientific excellence. It allows us to anticipate what is coming at us, beyond the latest crisis to be able to provide the scientific underpinning for future policy initiatives. It integrates the JRC's work across scientific and policy domains, and builds links between the different scientific and policy areas inside the Commission and beyond, since the challenges we face are so complex that one single area of science can rarely provide all the necessary answers. It assists policymakers to track and assess the impact of their policies. It strengthens partnerships with Commission services and with external stakeholders, such as Member States, European agencies, international organisations, and research institutes. It supports the Commission's political priorities and multiple initiatives included in the Commission work programme 2023 with its 33 portfolios.

Book Description
This report analyses the sequence of labour market support that individuals receive and evaluates two large public works programmes. It uses rich administrative data and finds positive labour market impacts of the Community Employment and Tús employment programmes. Building on the results of the analyses, the report makes recommendations on how Ireland can further adapt its active labour market policies (ALMPs) to better support its current and future jobseekers. This report on Ireland is the thirteenth country study published in a series of reports on policies to connect people with jobs, and is part of a joint project with the European Commission to strengthen countries’ capacity to evaluate ALMPs. The report is written jointly by the OECD, the Department of Social Protection of Ireland and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.

Book Description
This book explores the phenomenon of researchers at risk: that is, the experiences of scholars whose research topics require them to engage with diverse kind of dangers, uncertainties or vulnerabilities. This risk may derive from working with variously marginalised individuals or groups, or from being members of such groups themselves. At other times, the risk relates to particular economic or environmental conditions, or political forces influencing the specific research fields in which they operate. This book argues for the need to reconceptualise – and thereby to reimagine – the phenomenon of researchers’ risks, particularly when those risks are perceived to affect, and even to threaten the researchers. Drawing on a diverse and global range case studies including Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Balūchistān, Cyprus, and Germany, the chapters call for the need to identify effective strategies for engaging proactively with these risks to address precarity, jeopardy and uncertainty.

The multidimensional and intergenerational nature of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) calls for integrated policies. Progress made in a particular social, economic or environmental area or individual goal may generate synergies and trade-offs across dimensions (spillover effects), and steps taken in one country could have positive or negative impacts beyond national borders (transboundary effects).

Book Description
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing in areas such as pattern detection, classification, and prediction, which were long thought to be the exclusive realm of humans. These developments are triggering excitement about the potential of AI but are also raising concerns about possible risks. The versatility of AI and its speed of development have led to a wide range of applications, both in personal and professional environments. The most dramatic effects are, however, in the world of work. AI is impacting job loss and employability and causing a transformation of tasks in a range of occupations and sectors. It is also affecting other aspects of the labor market, such as recruitment, performance monitoring, and dismissal. As such, the development and implementation of AI are raising concerns about the future of work, both in terms of its mere existence and quality, with critical implications for the social fabric as well as future development prospects.
