John Tanner was born in 1778 at Hopkinton, Rhode Island, the son of Joshua and Thankful Tefft Tanner. His family migrated to Greenwich, New York, in 1791. He married Tabitha Bently (1780-1801), ca. 1800. They had one son born at Greenwich in 1801. He married 2) Lydia Stewart (1773-1825) at Greenwich in 1801. They had twelve children, 1802-1825, born at Greenwich and Bolton, New York. He married 3) Elizabeth Beswick (1803-1890) at Bolton, New York. They had eight children, 1826-1843, born at Bolton, Kirtland, Ohio, and in Lee County, Iowa. Seven of his children died as infants or children. He and his wife joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1832 and migrated west with the Mormon pioneer; first to Kirkland, Ohio, then to Far West, Missouri; Liberty, Illinois; Montrose, Iowa; Winter Quarters, Nebraska, and finally to Utah in 1848. Four of his children remained in the east. He died in the Salt Lake Valley in 1850. Descendants lived in Utah, California, Arizona, Canada, and elsewhere.

The father and four sons fought for the Union Army in the Civil War, which cost the lives of the father and two of the sons. The family history describes their businesses (primarily sawmills) in the Midwest; their experiences in the Civil War, including the story of an escape from a Confederate prison and return to the north; and Republican politics in Illinois the last part of the nineteenth century. Tanner has given 'us a brief statement of the manner in Which the data for his book was Collected. Following his explanation there is included brief excerpts from his book. These excerpts connect the earliest family record with John Tanner. The responsibility for the large undertaking in writing the gene alogy of John Tanner IS due to his great grandson Maurice Tan ner, whose pains -taking care and persistent determination has brought the present Genealogy to its completion. The Genealogy has been years in the course of preparation. Replies to letters of inquiry have not always been ungrudgingly given, and but for the love and pride for his ancestors by the author of this book, its completion might have been postponed for many years. Maurice Tanner has repeatedly expressed his acknowledgments to Apostle Franc1s M. Lyman for the latter' s accumulation of data respecting the descendants of John Tanner. Much of this data has been collected during visits that President F. M. Lyman made across the continent. At a meeting of the Tanner association. An executive committee consisting of J. M. Tanner, Rollin R. Tanner and Nathan A. Tanner was chosen. Maurice Tanner was chosen president of the as sociation, Earl Pingree Tanner its genealogist and Nathaniel H.
