Book Description
Art historians have long speculated on how Vermeer achieved the uncanny mixture of detached precision, compositional repose, and perspective accuracy that have drawn many to describe his work as "photographic." Indeed, many wonder if Vermeer employed a camera obscura, a primitive form of camera, to enhance his realistic effects? In Vermeer's Camera, Philip Steadman traces the development of the camera obscura--first described by Leonaro da Vinci--weighs the arguments that scholars have made for and against Vermeer's use of the camera, and offers a fascinating examination of the paintings themselves and what they alone can tell us of Vermeer's technique. Vermeer left no record of his method and indeed we know almost nothing of the man nor of how he worked. But by a close and illuminating study of the paintings Steadman concludes that Vermeer did use the camera obscura and shows how the inherent defects in this primitive device enabled Vermeer to achieve some remarkable effects--the slight blurring of image, the absence of sharp lines, the peculiar illusion not of closeness but of distance in the domestic scenes. Steadman argues that the use of the camera also explains some previously unexplainable qualities of Vermeer's art, such as the absence of conventional drawing, the pattern of underpainting in areas of pure tone, the pervasive feeling of reticence that suffuses his canvases, and the almost magical sense that Vermeer is painting not objects but light itself. Drawing on a wealth of Vermeer research and displaying an extraordinary sensitivity to the subtleties of the work itself, Philip Steadman offers in Vermeer's Camera a fresh perspective on some of the most enchanting paintings ever created.

The greatest compositions in history, waiting for your colors Bring them to life with your colors - they've been waiting for you, for this day... This is Great Artists Coloring book GAC10.103XL, a complete art coloring book, with both grayscales and traditional outlines (see back cover for full list in full color), alongside blanks for drawing and tracing. Outlines and grayscales each give you a stage in the artistic process: underdrawing and underpainting - choose the best for the coloring you love, or try both and become a master! In this art coloring mega book (large size, 220 pages): A Warm Welcome to the World of Art Coloring! In 1666, Johannes Vermeer labored in his studio to create some of the greatest compositions in human history, filling them with the best colors available to him. Now, with your pens, pencils, pastels and paints, you have in your pocket shades Vermeer could only dream of, and your own eye for color. Grab your chance to collaborate with him: fill these compositions with your colors and your eye; make them live again, and create amazing artworks that span the centuries. A Colorist's Guide: Both outlines and grayscales are provided for you - the artist's 'underdrawing' and 'underpainting' stages. Try the grayscales first - they are just waiting for your colors to bring them to life. Outlines & blanks give you ultimate freedom to bring your own ideas to the work - with just the lightest of beginnings from the amazing composition. If you think you have made a mistake, don't worry, keep going until you have filled the frame with color - every stroke is part of your journey with great art, and your hand has traced the same contours of genius that Vermeer's did in 1666. Book Description
A vivid account of Dutch seventeenth-century art and material culture against the backdrop of the geopolitics of the early modern world The seventeenth century witnessed a great flourishing of Dutch trade and culture. Over the course of the first half of the century, the northern Netherlands secured independence from the Spanish crown, and the nascent republic sought to establish its might in global trade, often by way of diplomatic relations with the Ottoman Empire and other Muslim powers. Central to the political and cultural identity of the Dutch Republic were curious foreign goods the Dutch called "rarities." Rarities of These Lands explores how these rarities were obtained, exchanged, stolen, valued, and collected, tracing their global trajectories and considering their role within the politics of the new state. Claudia Swan’s insightful, engaging analysis offers a novel and compelling account of how the Dutch Republic turned foreign objects into expressions of its national self-conception. Rarities of These Lands traces key elements of the formation of the Dutch Republic—artistic and colonialist ventures alike—offering new perspectives on this momentous period in the history of the Netherlands and its material culture.
