Book Description
"The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangzi River in China is a massive project entwined in controversy. When finally completed in 2009, it will stand as the world's largest generator of hydroelectric power, with a yearly output equal to that of fifty million tons of coal or fifteen nuclear power plants. However, the dam's 375-mile reservoir has already displaced over one million people and submerged over one thousand towns and villages. This publication examines the work that four leading contemporary Chinese artists - Chen Qiulin, Yun-Fei Ji, Liu Xiaodong, and Zhuang Hui - have created in response to the dam. Despite differences in backgrounds and artistic practices, these artists have engaged with the theme of displacement, responding to the movement of people, the demolition of old towns and construction of new cities, and the astonishing changes the project is bringing to the local landscape. Their powerful works represent four major branches of contemporary Chinese art: ink painting, realist oil painting, conceptual photography, and performance and new media art." "Displacement: The Three Gorges Dam and Contemporary Chinese Art continues a series of Smart Museum catalogues produced in conjunction with Wu Hung's groundbreaking exhibitions of contemporary Chinese art. Through extensive illustrations, interviews, and a substantial essay by Wu Hung, the publication documents the exhibiting artists' work, backgrounds, and concerns. Other essays extend consideration to representations of the Three Gorges Dam in film and in contemporary art in the West. Moving beyond any single medium or trend, Displacement offers nuanced, thought-provoking perspectives on a project of great social, environmental, and global concern."--BOOK JACKET.

In Kao Gong Ji: The World’s Oldest Encyclopaedia of Technologies, Guan Zengjian and Konrad Herrmann offer an English translation and commentary of the first technological encyclopaedia in China. This work came into being around the 5th century C.E. and contains descriptions of thirty technologies used at the time. Most prominent are bronze casting, the manufacture of carriages and weapons, a metrological standard, the making of musical instruments, and the planning of cities. The technologies, including the manufacturing process and quality assurance, are based on standardization and modularization. In several commentaries, the editors show to which degree the descriptions of Kao Gong Ji correspond to archaeological findings. Book Description
In 1975, as a young Peace Corps volunteer, Kevin Bubriski (born 1954) was sent to Nepal's northwest Karnali Zone, the country's remotest and most economically depressed region. He walked the length and breadth of the Karnali, conducting feasibility studies for gravity-flow drinking water systems and overseeing their construction. He also photographed the villagers he lived among, producing an extraordinary series of 35mm and large-format black-and-white images. Over more than three decades, Bubriski has returned many times to Nepal, maintaining his close association with the country and its people. "Images of Nepal 1975-2011" presents this remarkable body of work--photographs that document Nepal's evolution over a 36-year period from a traditional Himalayan culture to the globalized society of today. Both visual anthropology and cultural history, it is also a succinct look at one photographer's aesthetic evolution.

Book Description
"The first 23 medals in Medals of Dishonour create a fascinating commentary on events and issues of the 16th-20th centuries, and include Dutch medals satirizing kings; German and British medals on financial scandal and political corruption; a French medal showing a future emperor as an insect; German medals of the First World War period lambasting war; and two 1939 American medals protesting against racism and capitalism." "The second part of the book focuses on medals recently commissioned by the British Art Medal Trust from 16 celebrated contemporary artists. Their brief was to tackle the global issues of our time. Jake and Dinos Chapman graphically expose the banality of war, while the allied invasion of Iraq in 2003 is addressed in differing but equally powerful ways by Steve Bell, Richard Hamilton, Yun-Fei Ji and Cornelia Parker. Geo-politics, oppression and the abuse of power are the subjects of medals by Mona Hatoum, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, William Kentridge and Langlands and Bell. Ellen Gallagher confronts the horrors of racial exploitation, Michael Landy turns anti-social behaviour on its head, and Grayson Perry mocks western consumerism. In the final medal, Felicity Powell pours scorn on the responses of public figures to environmental issues." "With over 170 illustrations, including details and accompanying drawings as well as the actual medals themselves, Medals of Dishonour provides an intriguing exploration into a darker tradition of medal-making." --Book Jacket.

Book Description
This survey catalogue of the American figurative painter, his first in London since 2000, highlights key aspects of the artist's oeuvre from the 1950s until his death in 2004.Golub's paintings from the 1950s depict universal images of man and reference the classical figure found in antiquity, while his highly political series of the 1970s and 1980s draws on the Vietnam War, American foreign policy and the rise of paramilitary soldiers in places such as South Africa and Latin America. His work from the 1990s incorporates slogans, text, graffiti and symbols into dystopian scenes of urban existence.Throughout his career Golub was guided by his belief that art should have relevance. His works are profoundly psychological and emotive - often painted on a huge scale - and return again and again to themes of oppression, violence and the misuse of power. This publication features a conversation between Helaine Posner, Katy Kline, Leon Golub and Nancy Spero.Published on the occasion of the exhibition Leon Golub: Bite Your Tongue at Serpentine Gallery, London, 4 March - 17 May 2015.
