Book Description
The end to the Japanese war in August 1945 came as a complete surprise to the forces in the field. Preparations had been in hand for the assault on Okinawa, planned for November 1945. The initial momentum to establish an occupying force on the main islands came from the American government. Yet a desire for a positive British presence in Japan, backed up by other battle-hardened Commonwealth nations, provides this narrative with the conflict between MacArthur and what were his allies, for political pretensions as a major power in the Far East.

Book Description
The Allied Occupation of Japan lasted from 2 September 1945 to 28 April 1952 and ushered in an era of unprecedented change for that country. Although British Commonwealth participation played only small part in that story – involving only some 30,000 troops from the various Commonwealth countries compared with the vast numbers of the United States Eighth Army – it nevertheless prompts a discussion, hitherto largely undocumented, concerning its role and relevance. In The British Commonwealth and the Allied Occupation of Japan, Ian Nish who himself was a member of BCOF presents papers by twenty-three authors, partly biographical, partly academic, on subjects grouped in five themes: Origins of the Allied Occupation, Attitudes on the Occupation, Personal Views, the Commonwealth and Peace Negotiations, and the Commonwealth and the Japanese Treaties.

Book Description
This is a rare account of early post-war Japan from the cutting edge of day-to-day work in the Allied occupation, by an Australian soldier trained in the Japanese language for occupation work. It provides a wealth of insights into the lives both of the soldiers in the British Commonwealth Occupation Force and of the Japanese with whom they lived and worked. Basil Archer writes vividly about his journey to Japan via Morotai in Indonesia, his intelligence work as an interpreter in a country area, the places he visited and th people he encountered - Japanese, English, Scottish, Indian, American and Australian. Basil Archer served in Japan during 1946 as a language officer in the British Commonwealth Occupation Force. After discharge from the Army he worked for the Western Australian State Electricity Commission, then for the Government Chemical Laboratories and finally as Laboratory Manager of the Chemistry Department of Curtin University of Technology. He is now retired and lives in Perth, where his is Secretry of the BCOF Association of Western Australia.
