Although many scholars have addressed the central problems of interpretation in the work of James Joyce, less attention has been given to Joyce as a writer working within a specific literary and social context. This volume of 18 essays, distilled from a conference on Joyce and his contemporaries, focuses on Joyce's work from a variety of perspectives and examines his relationship to the Irish literary milieu and his connections to other writers and public figures of the period. The first group of essays explores questions relating to narrative and characterization in The Dead, Finnegans Wake, Ulysses, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. All Future Plunges to the Past explores how Russian writers from the mid-1920s on have read and responded to Joyce's work. Through contextually rich close readings, José Vergara uncovers the many roles Joyce has occupied in Russia over the last century, demonstrating how the writers Yury Olesha, Vladimir Nabokov, Andrei Bitov, Sasha Sokolov, and Mikhail Shishkin draw from Joyce's texts, particularly Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, to address the volatile questions of lineages in their respective Soviet, émigré, and post-Soviet contexts. Interviews with contemporary Russian writers, critics, and readers of Joyce extend the conversation to the present day, showing how the debates regarding the Irish writer's place in the Russian pantheon are no less settled one hundred years after Ulysses. The creative reworkings, or "translations," of Joycean themes, ideas, characters, plots, and styles made by the five writers Vergara examines speak to shifting cultural norms, understandings of intertextuality, and the polarity between Russia and the West. James Joyce and After: Writer and Time is a volume of essays examining various aspects of time in literature, starting with the modernist revolution in fictional time initiated, among others, by Joyce, up until the present. In Part One: “James Joyce and Commodius Vicus of Recirculation,” the largest group of essays offers new and insightful readings of Finnegans Wake, Ulysses, Dubliners and Pomes Penyeach, reflecting a variety of Joyce’s experiments with time as well as demonstrating patterns and cross-references in his lifelong artistic explorations. Part Two: “Writer and Private Time,” focuses on selected literary responses to subjective experience of time. The articles analyse Joyce’s epiphanies, Elizabeth Bishop’s rendition of a lyrical moment in her poetry, as well as the interplay of fiction and autobiography in the writings of Joseph Conrad and J. M. Coetzee. Another article in this section uses the Bakhtinian concept of chronotope to emphasise simultaneity of reading and writing in the newly defined genre of liberature. At the other end of the (temporal) spectrum, the articles in Part Three: “Writer and Public Time,” devoted to recent fiction, testify to the constant need for seeking new ways of recording the temporal dimension of collective experience. It is argued that the engagement with Victorianism in contemporary fiction has resulted in a special treatment of time involving duality of temporal levels, while the emerging post-9/11 genre takes account of the new audiovisual media in order to respond to one of the most traumatic experiences in contemporary history.
