Book Description
Excerpt from Irish Recollections I was born in the City of Cork, a city sur rounded by some Of the most picturesque, poetic, and delightful regions to be found anywhere throughout the island. It is divided by the River Lee, and the Lee itself passes down through a district ornamented by beautiful, although not lofty hills and through exquisite plains, rich meadows, and delightful gardens, then streams through the city, and at last pours itself into the harbour of Queenstown, called in my early days the Cove of Cork, or more commonly by the abbreviated name of Cove, into the open sea. The home which I remember best in Cork was made up of a small house with a garden running down to the edge of the river, and when one had closed the gate behind him he seemed to be removed entirely from the commonplace working day world of business and traffic. He was stand ing at one end of a pretty garden with its little meadow, its fruit trees, and its abundant flowers, and just beneath him flowed the River Lee, there a narrow, rushing stream along whose opposite bank were meadows and trees, and in the farther background gently sloping hills. Book Description
Excerpt from Recollections of the Irish War Even in Ireland, folk in thinking of the war that ended in the establishment by International Treaty of the Free State go back no further than the Easier Rising of 1916. Little wonder that this way of thought should prevail outside Ireland. Life, however, does not work in this fashion. History, which is the record of Life, reveals a far-reaching series of connected causes and effects, difficult to disconnect into the trim order that the unimaginative mind requires. To follow any part of that record, from whatever personal standpoint it be seen, with understanding and interest, it is necessary, therefore, briefly to note the framework into which it is set. The Easter Rising of 1916 reaches back through two personalities to older events. Noble minds planned that Rising as an heroic gesture of sacrifice. Other minds, not less noble, held aloof because they saw no justification for it on military or political grounds. But of them all two (one on each side) connected that event, and the causes that immediately produced it, with earlier history. These two therefore are specially significant. The first of them is Arthur Griffith. He held aloof; but he took the Rising back to the fall of Parnell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Some Time in Ireland: A Recollection Writers professing to describe social and family life in Ireland have mostly selected their types from roistering squires or ruined country gentlemen. My aim is to depict, from the vivid recollections of my earlier years and from my later experience, views, feelings, habits, and principles, more really and truly characteristic of the gentry of Ireland. Book Description
Excerpt from Irish Faith in America: Recollections of a Missionary I willingly accept the dedication of a study, the subject and object of which are equally clear to us both. People, like individuals, have each a vocation to follow and a mission to fulfil. The mission of the Irish people, a noble and holy mission among all others, is that of propagating and maintaining the Catholic faith. You show by incontestable facts this voca tion of the Irish people, and the manner in which they fulfil their mission in the United States, a country which particularly interests us; but history tells that in every missionary country, as in the United States, the Irish with invincible energy and untiring persever ance, have proved themselves the firm sup porters and propagators of the Catholic faith. You justly recall how dear to me is that por tion of my flock which belongs to the Irish nation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Recollections of the Irish Church Travellers in Africa tell us that when through design or accident, one of the large ant nests which are found on the banks of the Senegal River is destroyed, the animals immediately commence to construct another on the same spot, and such is their spirit of industry, that in a brief time the bill, which had been once their habitation, is almost reproduced, and at once occupied again by the little architects as their home.
