Many of the commodities shipped by rail require transportation both to and from the railroad terminal by truck. To facilitate this modal transfer, the railroads have developed a combination service whereby a trailer is loaded at its origin, transported to a rail terminal by truck, loaded on a rail carrier, and transported by truck to its final destination. This operation is called trailer-on-flatcar (TOFC) service, and is more commonly referred to as "piggyback" service.
