Book Description
Long before astronauts ventured into space, scientists and philosophers used models to develop theories about Earth and what lies beyond it. This experimentation guide shows students how they too can create models to forge a deep understanding of topics like the scale of the solar system, how eclipses occur, and the cyclic patterns that govern life on our planet. Through the creation of models, readers learn how to develop and test hypotheses and how to represent their findings visually in graphs and charts.

Book Description
This book provides an in-depth view on Bourdieu’s empirical work, thereby specially focusing on the construction of the social space and including the concept of the habitus. Themes described in the book include amongst others: • the theory and methodology for the construction of “social spaces”, • the relation between various “fields” and “the field of power”, • formal construction and empirical observation of habitus, • the formation, accumulation, differentiation of and conversion between different forms of capital, • relations in geometric data analysis. The book also includes contributions regarding particular applications of Bourdieu’s methodology to traditional and new areas of research, such as the analysis of institutional, international and transnational fields. It further provides a systematic introduction into the empirical construction of the social space.

Book Description
The Parameter Space Investigation (PSI) method was developed to help engineers with a wide range of multicriteria optimization problems, such as design, identification, design of control systems, and operational development of prototypes. This unique resource shows you how to use PSI to construct a feasible solution set without limitations on the number of parameters and criteria. The book presents visualization tools that are used to construct the feasible solution set, conduct multicriteria analysis, and correct the initial problem statement. You explore topics that have not been covered in any other books, including multicriteria analysis from observational data, multicriteria optimization of large-scale systems in parallel mode, adopting the PSI method for database searches, and interpretation of the prototype improvement problem. The book also offers guidance in understanding and using the accompanying, newly released MOVI software package.

Book Description
This volume is the product of a technical session organized for the 2002 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in recognition of Isaac Kaplan's many contributions to various fields of geochemistry. As Kaplan enters his sixth decade of scientific investigation, it is fair to say that his work has touched or influenced innumerable scientists either directly or indirectly. Readers of this volume are presented with a collection of 29 papers written by former students, post-doctoral researchers, friends and colleagues from countries all over the world (including Sweden, Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, Israel and the United States) from the fields of stable isotope, forensic, environmental and petroleum geochemistry, atmospheric chemistry and cosmochemistry. The stable isotope section includes papers investigating climate change, diagenesis, recent sediment and petroleum geochemistry and cosmochemistry problems. The forensic and environmental geochemistry section includes a variety of papers ranging from trace metals in soils to atmospheric CO2 projections. The petroleum geochemistry section includes both basic research and applied geochemistry papers. The ancient and recent sediments section contains papers ranging from carbon flux in modern sediments to Precambrian microfossils. All of the articles together cover a broad range of geochemical studies and represent the diverse and distinguished career of Isaac Kaplan.

Book Description
The Special Issue on Advances in Modeling and Management of Urban Water Networks (UWNs) explores four important topics of research in the context of UWNs: asset management, modeling of demand and hydraulics, energy recovery, and pipe burst identification and leakage reduction. In the first topic, the multi-objective optimization of interventions on the network is presented to find trade-off solutions between costs and efficiency. In the second topic, methodologies are presented to simulate and predict demand and to simulate network behavior in emergency scenarios. In the third topic, a methodology is presented for the multi-objective optimization of pump-as-turbine (PAT) installation sites in transmission mains. In the fourth topic, methodologies for pipe burst identification and leakage reduction are presented. As for the urban drainage systems (UDSs), the two explored topics are asset management, with a system upgrade to reduce flooding, and modeling of flow and water quality, with analyses on the transition from surface to pressurized flow, impact of water use reduction on the operation of UDSs, and sediment transport in pressurized pipes. The Special Issue also includes one paper dealing with the hydraulic modeling of an urban river with a complex cross-section.

Book Description
An investigation has been conducted at the Langley Research Center to determine the feasibility of a method for folding, packaging, and deployment of an inflatable 2k-foot-diameter toroidal space station model. The model was tested under atmospheric conditions and in a 60-foot-diameter vacuum sphere at a vacuum pressure of 1 mm Hg. It was found during these tests that the packaging factor of the torus component of the 2k-foot-diameter space station model torus was k.l. This packaging factor was determined by dividing the folded volume of the material by the calculated material volume based on 0.08k-inch material thickness. The torus was folded and packaged to 1.58 percent of the fully inflated volume. This procedure reduced the volume from 2511 cubic feet to 52 cubic feet; it caused no apparent damage to the torus bladder and no permanent creasing, nor did it have any effect on the material permeability in the tests performed. Cords of the filament cage remained tightly bonded to the bladder and did not appear to be damaged. The internal collapsible compartments did not hinder the folding process of the torus and there was no apparent damage to these compartments due to the packaging. Results of the folding and packaging tests indicate that the folding procedures developed can be used for inflatable toroidal shape configurations. Also, the materials utilized in the construction of the torus were adequate in that they complied with the test-program requirements of a durable inflatable material that could readily be packaged into a tight compact unit with minimum damage to the material.
