Book Description
Discover the essential thinking tools you’ve been missing with The Great Mental Models series by Shane Parrish, New York Times bestselling author and the mind behind the acclaimed Farnam Street blog and “The Knowledge Project” podcast. This first book in the series is your guide to learning the crucial thinking tools nobody ever taught you. Time and time again, great thinkers such as Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett have credited their success to mental models–representations of how something works that can scale onto other fields. Mastering a small number of mental models enables you to rapidly grasp new information, identify patterns others miss, and avoid the common mistakes that hold people back. The Great Mental Models: Volume 1, General Thinking Concepts shows you how making a few tiny changes in the way you think can deliver big results. Drawing on examples from history, business, art, and science, this book details nine of the most versatile, all-purpose mental models you can use right away to improve your decision making and productivity. This book will teach you how to: Avoid blind spots when looking at problems. Find non-obvious solutions. Anticipate and achieve desired outcomes. Play to your strengths, avoid your weaknesses, … and more. The Great Mental Models series demystifies once elusive concepts and illuminates rich knowledge that traditional education overlooks. This series is the most comprehensive and accessible guide on using mental models to better understand our world, solve problems, and gain an advantage.

"Inverse Proportionality Thinking" unveils the hidden power of the "less is more" principle across a surprising range of areas within life, work, and our understanding of the world itself. Break Free from "Shoulds" and "Musts: " Cultivate peace in an "always-on" culture, setting your own priorities. Develop a Unique Perspective: Stand out from the crowd with contrarian thinking that cuts through complexity. "Inverse Proportionality Thinking" is an invitation to question assumptions, embrace trade-offs, and reimagine what it truly means to live a successful and fulfilling life. Let this book be your guide to the transformative power of less. "Inverse Proportionality Thinking: The Power of the 'Less is More' Philosophy" reveals how working less can boost productivity, limitations can spark creativity, and saying "no" can open unexpected doors.

Book Description
In a radical reinterpretation of how the mind works, an eminent behavioral scientist reveals the illusion of mental depth Psychologists and neuroscientists struggle with how best to interpret human motivation and decision making. The assumption is that below a mental “surface” of conscious awareness lies a deep and complex set of inner beliefs, values, and desires that govern our thoughts, ideas, and actions, and that to know this depth is to know ourselves. In this profoundly original book, behavioral scientist Nick Chater contends just the opposite: rather than being the plaything of unconscious currents, the brain generates behaviors in the moment based entirely on our past experiences. Engaging the reader with eye-opening experiments and visual examples, the author first demolishes our intuitive sense of how our mind works, then argues for a positive interpretation of the brain as a ceaseless and creative improviser.

Book Description
How many times in the course of our New Thought studies have we heard phrases such as "Think POSITIVE", "CANCEL those NEGATIVE thoughts!" and "Don't think NEGATIVE thoughts or NEGATIVE things will happen!" And how many times, as students and seekers of health and happiness, have we found ourselves unable to stay with that "Think Positive" philosophy and ended up thinking "There's something wrong with me, I'm just not doing it right." Could it be that by trying to get rid of our "NEGATIVE" thoughts and "UNCOMFORTABLE" sensations, we are, in fact, suppressing, ignoring and avoiding one of the greatest tools we have for healing and living a full life? In this revelatory new book, David Friedman looks directly at our "NEGATIVE" thoughts and "UNCOMFORTABLE" sensations and reveals them not as things to be feared or ignored, but rather as messages from our past, tools we can use to heal any long-avoided traumas that may arise when we try to "think positive."

Book Description
This book is a sequel to The Practice of Machine Design, and The Practice of Machine Design, Book 3 – Learning from Failure. It deals with what happens inside the human mind during such activities as design and production, and how we reach decisions. Unlike other regular machine design textbooks or handbooks that describe how to accomplish good designs, the present volume explains what the designer thinks when making design decisions. A design starts with a vague concept and gradually takes shapes as it proceeds, and during this process the mind extracts elements and makes selections and decisions, the results expressed in sketches, drawings, or sentences. This book aims at exposing the reader to the processes of element extraction, selection, and decision-making through real-life examples. Such a book has never been published before. An explicit description of the processes of making decisions, on the contrary, has been greatly needed by designers, and the managers of design groups have been much aware of such a lack. The non-existence of this type of book in the past is due to the following three reasons: the benefit of describing the mind process of design was never made clear, the method of such clarification was unknown, and no one ever invested the vast energy for producing such a manifestation. Under these circumstances, we the members of the “Practice of Machine Design Research Group” boldly tackled the problem of expressing the decision processes in design and have documented our findings in this book.
