Excerpt from Inverness Kirk-Session Records: 1661-1800 The matter contained in the following pages was originally intended to be read before local societies which take an interest in such subjects, but having been seen by the Editor of the "Inverness Courier," he thought it sufficiently interesting to print in the paper, and now in this form. Whatever belongs to the past is interesting to some people, while to others anything relating to the town or parish, historically or ecclesiastically, is worthy of record, and although the number of such people are few, yet it is hoped they may justify to some extent the present production. The few excellent works on local affairs already existing do not include the period embraced by these Kirk-Session Records, nor do they deal with the matters of detail contained in them, which afford some new illustrations of the conditions of life in Inverness in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. Necessarily in these Church Records of over 200 years ago, when discipline formed so large a part of the functions of the Kirk-Session, life in its seamy side appears uppermost, but there are not wanting glimpses of the better and kindlier side of human nature, nor of the more elevating, if rather austere, social and religious habits and customs of our ancestors. This book examines the climatic and economic origins of the last national famine to occur in Scotland, the nature and extent of the crisis which ensued, and what the impact of the famine was upon the population in demographic, economic and social terms. Current published knowledge about the causes, extent, and impact of the famine in Scotland is limited and many conclusions have been speculative in the absence of extensive research. Despite the critical importance of this crisis, one of the four disasters of the 1690s, which are widely acknowledged to have contributed to the economic arguments in favour of the Union of the Parliaments in 1707, the topic has been largely neglected and even underplayed by historians. This is the first full study of the famine, providing a unique scholarly examination of the causes, course, characteristics and consequences of the crisis. A comprehensive study of agricultural, climatic, economic, social and demographic issues, the book seeks to establish answers to the fundamental question concerning the event. How serious was it? The Brahan Seer is a legendary figure known throughout Scotland and the Scottish Diaspora and indeed anywhere there is an interest in looking into the future. This book traces the legend of the Seer between the sixteenth and twenty-first centuries. It considers the seer figure in relation to aspects of Scottish Highland culture and society that shaped its development during this period. These include the practice and prosecution of witchcraft, the reporting and scientific investigation of instances of second sight, and the perennial belief in and use of prophecy as a means of predicting events. In so doing the book provides a set of historicised contexts for understanding the genesis of the legend and how it changed over time through a synthesis of historical events, oral tradition, folklore and literary Romanticism. It makes a contribution to the debates not only about witchcraft, second sight and prophecy but also about the relationship between 'popular' and 'elite' culture in Scotland. By taking the Brahan Seer as a case study it argues that 'popular' culture is not antithetical to 'elite' culture but rather in constant (and complex) interaction with it.
