The Intestinal Diseases of Infancy and Childhood, Vol. 2
Author: Abraham Jacobi
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780656183890
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 152
Book Description
Excerpt from The Intestinal Diseases of Infancy and Childhood, Vol. 2: Physiology, Hygiene, Pathology and Therapeutics Fat is not completely absorbed. Part of it leaves the intestine in the form of soap. Another portion is free fat acid. A third part remains unchanged. There is a large amount of faces, although the baby receives absolutely nothing but mother's milk. What has been called detritus in the faces is not exclusively undigested caseine, but principally fat, and a large portion is the remnant of intestinal epithelium. This so-called detritus is not soluble in water, in acid or alkalies, but quite soluble in alcohol and ether. Caseine is present only when it has been taken in too large quantities, or when there is too much free acid in the stomach. In these cases there may be large amounts in the faces.
