Since the late nineteenth century, modernizing intellectuals, religious leaders, and statesmen in Iran have attempted to curtail many such practices as "superstitious," instead encouraging the development of rational religious sensibilities and dispositions. However, far from diminishing the diverse methods through which Iranians engage with the immaterial realm, these rationalizing processes have multiplied the possibilities for metaphysical experimentation. The Iranian Metaphysicals examines these experiments and their transformations over the past century. Drawing on years of ethnographic and archival research, Alireza Doostdar shows that metaphysical experimentation lies at the center of some of the most influential intellectual and religious movements in modern Iran. An original study of the transformation of Safavid Persia from a majority Sunni country to a Twelver Shi'i realm "Mysticism" in Iran is an in-depth analysis of significant transformations in the religious landscape of Safavid Iran that led to the marginalization of Sufism and the eventual emergence of 'irfan as an alternative Shi'i model of spirituality. Ata Anzali draws on a treasure-trove of manuscripts from Iranian archives to offer an original study of the transformation of Safavid Persia from a majority Sunni country to a Twelver Shi'i realm. The work straddles social and intellectual history, beginning with an examination of late Safavid social and religious contexts in which Twelver religious scholars launched a successful campaign against Sufism with the tacit approval of the court. This led to the social, political, and economic marginalization of Sufism, which was stigmatized as an illegitimate mode of piety rooted in a Sunni past. Anzali directs the reader's attention to creative and successful attempts by other members of the ulama to incorporate the Sufi tradition into the new Twelver milieu. He argues that the category of 'irfan, or "mysticism," was invented at the end of the Safavid period by mystically minded scholars such as Shah Muhammad Darabi and Qutb al-Din Nayrizi in reference to this domesticated form of Sufism. Key aspects of Sufi thought and practice were revisited in the new environment, which Anzali demonstrates by examining the evolving role of the spiritual master. This traditional Sufi function was reimagined by Shi'i intellectuals to incorporate the guidance of the infallible imams and their deputies, the ulama. Anzali goes on to address the institutionalization of 'irfan in Shi'i madrasas and the role played by prominent religious scholars of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in this regard. The book closes with a chapter devoted to fascinating changes in the thought and practice of 'irfan in the twentieth century during the transformative processes of modernity. Focusing on the little-studied figure of Kayvan Qazvini and his writings, Anzali explains how 'irfan was embraced as a rational, science-friendly, nonsectarian, and anticlerical concept by secular Iranian intellectuals.

It is interesting that women who campaign for womenâ (TM)s rights and interests in Iran have not considered engaging with women who are neither conventional Muslims nor strongly secular, but instead explore other aspects of religion and spirituality. Scholarship on women in Iran has not yet taken such an approach, and has not considered womenâ (TM)s interests in spirituality with regard to religion. As such, this book differs greatly from existing work on Iranian womenâ (TM)s lives after the Islamic revolution. It examines the potential feminist implications of womenâ (TM)s involvement in one of the most popular spiritual movements, â oeInter-universal Mysticismâ and its emancipatory potential for women. Halqeh Mysticism (Erfan-e Halqeh) conforms to the framework of Iran's native Erfan (mysticism). It consists of two aspects: theoretical (the world of tools) and practical (the world free of tools), and is based on the connection to the several Halqehes of the Interuniversal Consciousness, and the Divine Communal Mercy. Since Halqeh mysticism embraces all human beings, everybody regardless of their race, nationality, religion, personal beliefs, gender, age, education, knowledge, experience, type of nutrition, exercise and so on, can make use of it. The fundamentals of Halqeh mysticism are: Becoming connected (linkage or Ettesal) to the Divine Consciousness (or the network of Interuniversal Consciousness). Identifying the Positive Network and the Negative Network, and avoiding the Negative Network. Identifying anything other than God or instead of Him and avoiding it. Identifying and differentiating Kamal from Power and moving toward Kamal. Understanding the meaning and insight behind the ceremonies and rituals. According to Halqeh mysticism, all the achievements which are gained on the kamal's pathway, are as the result of one's eagerness and enthusiasm (Eshtiyaq). Therefore, in this branch of Erfan there is no emphasis on mortification, asceticism, and so on, and the only condition for benefiting from the Halqehes is becoming an impartial observer.
