Simple reaction time to stimuli from different sensory modalities presented simultaneously typically is shorter than reaction time to a single stimulus. In this study, auditory, visual, and tactile stimuli were presented in different combinations and at varying stimulus onset asynchronies. Two different types of models for the observed reaction time facilitation effects are developed and tested. Separate activation (race) type models assume that stimulus information in different sensory channels is processed in parallel and independently while coactivation type models allow interactions across different channels. Using Boole's inequality as a test for separate activation models it could be shown that these models cannot predict as much facilitation as observed. A superposition and a diffusion model of coactivation provided a promising quantitative approximation to the data.

We perceive and understand our environment using many sensory systems-vision, touch, hearing, taste, smell, and proprioception. These multiple sensory modalities not only give us complementary sources of information about the environment but also an understanding that is richer and more complex than one modality alone could achieve. As adults, we integrate the multiple signals from these sense organs into unified functional representations. However, the ease with which we accomplish this feat belies its computational complexity. Not only do the senses convey information about the environment in different neural codes, but the relationship between the senses frequently changes when, for example, the body changes posture (e.g. when the eyes move in their sockets), or indeed shape, when the body grows across development. These computational problems prompt an important question which represents the key focus of this book: How do we develop the ability to integrate the senses? Over the past century, educational psychologists and researchers have posited many theories to explain how individuals learn, i.e. how they acquire, organize and deploy knowledge and skills.
