The study of the classical Dirichlet space is one of the central topics on the intersection of the theory of holomorphic functions and functional analysis. It was introduced about100 years ago and continues to be an area of active current research. The theory is related to such important themes as multipliers, reproducing kernels, and Besov spaces, among others. The authors present the theory of the Dirichlet space and related spaces starting with classical results and including some quite recent achievements like Dirichlet-type spaces of functions in several complex variables and the corona problem. The first part of this book is an introduction to the function theory and operator theory of the classical Dirichlet space, a space of holomorphic functions on the unit disk defined by a smoothness criterion. The Dirichlet space is also a Hilbert space with a reproducing kernel, and is the model for the dyadic Dirichlet space, a sequence space defined on the dyadic tree. These various viewpoints are used to study a range of topics including the Pick property, multipliers, Carleson measures, boundary values, zero sets, interpolating sequences, the local Dirichlet integral, shift invariant subspaces, and Hankel forms. Recurring themes include analogies, sometimes weak and sometimes strong, with the classical Hardy space; and the analogy with the dyadic Dirichlet space. The final chapters of the book focus on Besov spaces of holomorphic functions on the complex unit ball, a class of Banach spaces generalizing the Dirichlet space. Additional techniques are developed to work with the nonisotropic complex geometry, including a useful invariant definition of local oscillation and a sophisticated variation on the dyadic Dirichlet space. Descriptions are obtained of multipliers, Carleson measures, interpolating sequences, and multiplier interpolating sequences; estimates are obtained to prove corona theorems.

In this monograph, for elliptic systems with block structure in the upper half-space and t-independent coefficients, the authors settle the study of boundary value problems by proving compatible well-posedness of Dirichlet, regularity and Neumann problems in optimal ranges of exponents. Prior to this work, only the two-dimensional situation was fully understood. In higher dimensions, partial results for existence in smaller ranges of exponents and for a subclass of such systems had been established. The presented uniqueness results are completely new, and the authors also elucidate optimal ranges for problems with fractional regularity data. The first part of the monograph, which can be read independently, provides optimal ranges of exponents for functional calculus and adapted Hardy spaces for the associated boundary operator. Methods use and improve, with new results, all the machinery developed over the last two decades to study such problems: the Kato square root estimates and Riesz transforms, Hardy spaces associated to operators, off-diagonal estimates, non-tangential estimates and square functions, and abstract layer potentials to replace fundamental solutions in the absence of local regularity of solutions.

Self-adaptive discretization methods are now an indispensable tool for the numerical solution of partial differential equations that arise from physical and technical applications. The aim is to obtain a numerical solution within a prescribed tolerance using a minimal amount of work. The main tools in achieving this goal are a posteriori error estimates which give global and local information on the error of the numerical solution and which can easily be computed from the given numerical solution and the data of the differential equation. This book reviews the most frequently used a posteriori error estimation techniques and applies them to a broad class of linear and nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations. Although there are various approaches to adaptivity and a posteriori error estimation, they are all based on a few common principles. The main aim of the book is to elaborate these basic principles and to give guidelines for developing adaptive schemes for new problems. Chapters 1 and 2 are quite elementary and present various error indicators and their use for mesh adaptation in the framework of a simple model problem. The basic principles are introduced using a minimal amount of notations and techniques providing a complete overview for the non-specialist. Chapters 4-6 on the other hand are more advanced and present a posteriori error estimates within a general framework using the technical tools collected in Chapter 3. Many phenomena in engineering and mathematical physics can be modeled by means of boundary value problems for a certain elliptic differential operator in a given domain. When the differential operator under discussion is of second order a variety of tools are available for dealing with such problems, including boundary integral methods, variational methods, harmonic measure techniques, and methods based on classical harmonic analysis. When the differential operator is of higher-order (as is the case, e.g., with anisotropic plate bending when one deals with a fourth order operator) only a few options could be successfully implemented. In the 1970s Alberto Calderón, one of the founders of the modern theory of Singular Integral Operators, advocated the use of layer potentials for the treatment of higher-order elliptic boundary value problems. The present monograph represents the first systematic treatment based on this approach.
