The 'Red International of Labour Unions' (RILU, Russian abbreviation Profintern) was a central instrument for the spreading of international communism during the inter-war period. This comprehensive and scholarly history of the organisation, based on extensive research in the former communist archives in Moscow and East Berlin, sheds significant light on the international trade union movement of the period. Tosstorff shows how the RILU began as a revolutionary alliance of syndicalists and communists in defiance of the social democratic International Federation of Trade Unions. His text presents a full account of the organisation’s main stages: the decline of the revolutionary wave after World War One, after which many syndicalists left, and others were integrated into the communist parties; the continuation of the RILU as an international communist apparatus; and its dissolution in 1936–7 as part of communism's popular front policy. The Workers' Unity League (WUL) occupies a storied place in Canadian labour history. In the bleak early years of the Great Depression, as jobs vanished, wages sank, and unions stood transfixed, "a small, but feisty organization" (ix) exploded onto industrial Canada and, by force of sheer political will, it seems, rallied an array of workers in heroic battle against some of the most recalcitrant employers in the country. Tales of these conflicts, particularly those in small centres such as Bienfait, Flin Flon, and Stratford, or in the woods of Vancouver Island or the mining communities of the Crowsnest Pass, are staples of labour history in this country and provide classic vignettes of class struggle at its rawest. The On-to-Ottawa Trek, the culmination of WUL organizing in the relief camps, represents in many a Canadian history survey the denouement of a narrative of social tensions stretched to the breaking point at mid-decade. Whatever one thinks of the wisdom of the WUL's actions, and historians' views are varied, the organization is credited with reigniting working-class resistance and with training a new generation of labour and political activists. The idea of European unity, which the Nordic states have historically resisted, has recently become the foremost concern of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Finland. Christine Ingebritsen provides a timely analysis of Nordic economic and security policies in the wake of the vast transformation of regional politics between 1985 and 1995. The Nordic States and European Unity addresses two central questions: Why did all five Nordic states trade autonomy for integration after 1985? And why do some follow the British pattern, resisting supranationalism, while others prefer the German strategy of embedding their policies in a common European project?Through extensive interviews with representatives of trade unions, government ministries, parliamentary committees, social movements, and military and industrial organizations, Ingebritsen charts adjustments to the idea of a regional system of governance. She highlights crucial differences among these nations as they seek to protect their borders against new security threats. In particular, Ingebritsen shows how the political influence of leading sectors affects each state's capacity to pursue an integrationist policy. Economic sectors are not uniformly affected by European policy coordination, and the experience of the Nordic states demonstrates this difference. Her work shifts the focus of political economics away from enduring, domestic institutions toward an understanding of institutions as sectoral and transnational.
