Book Description
An experimental flywheel energy storage system is described. This system is being used to develop a flywheel based replacement for the batteries on the International Space Station (ISS). Motor control algorithms which allow the flywheel to interface with a simplified model of the ISS power bus, and function similarly to the existing ISS battery system, are described. Results of controller experimental verification on a 300 W-hr flywheel are presented. Kascak, Peter E. and Kenny, Barbara H. and Dever, Timothy P. and Santiago, Walter and Jansen, Ralph H. Glenn Research Center NASA/TM-2001-211138, E-12993, IECEC2001-AT-10, NAS 1.15:211138

Energy Storage for Sustainable Microgrid
Author: David Wenzhong Gao
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128033754
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 153
Book Description
Energy Storage for Sustainable Microgrid addresses the issues related to modelling, operation and control, steady-state and dynamic analysis of microgrids with ESS. This book discusses major electricity storage technologies in depth along with their efficiency, lifetime cycles, environmental benefits and capacity, so that readers can envisage which type of storage technology is best for a particular microgrid application. This book offers solutions to numerous difficulties such as choosing the right ESS for the particular microgrid application, proper sizing of ESS for microgrid, as well as design of ESS control systems for proper interfacing with the microgrid. Explanations for major power electronic converters/technology required to achieve the desired interfacing Case studies on the major impacts of energy storage on microgrid Detailed solutions for choosing the right ESS for particular microgrid applications Valuable economics chapter to help evaluate entire systems

Smart Grids and Microgrids
Author: Prajof Prabhakaran
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119760550
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 405
Book Description
SMART GRIDS AND MICROGRIDS Written and edited by a team of experts in the field, this is the most comprehensive and up-to-date study of smart grids and microgrids for engineers, scientists, students, and other professionals. The power supply is one of the most important issues of our time. In every country, all over the world, from refrigerators to coffee makers to heating and cooling, almost everyone in the world needs to have access to power. As the global demand rises, new methods of delivering power, such as smart grids and microgrids, have, out of necessity or choice, been developed and researched. In this book, modern and advanced concepts of both microgrid and smart grid technology are introduced. Beginning from the brief fundamental concepts of microgrids and its various constituents this team of experts discusses different architectures, control issues, communication challenges, measurement, stability, power quality and mitigation, protection, and power electronic aspects of the microgrid system. Through this book, tools and techniques needed to design both microgrids and smart grids are discussed. Recent and developing topics like smart meter impact, remote data monitoring, communication protocols, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, big data, IoT, and many others are covered. Furthermore, this new volume also covers simulation and stability analysis tools pertaining to microgrids and smart grids. Throughout the book, detailed examples of microgrid and smart grid design and development strategies are provided, based on different constraints and requirements. Case studies, numerical models, and design examples are also included. Whether for the veteran engineer or student, this is a must-have volume for any library. Audience: Engineers, scientists, industry professionals, students, and other lay people involved in the business of smart grids and microgrids
