Book Description
Sustaining Global Growth and Development focuses on the new challenges for sustaining growth in the twenty-first century and the role of the G7 and IMF in meeting these challenges amidst the new processes of regionalism now emerging. The volume has three central purposes: · to assess how and how well the G7 has addressed its core 2002 agenda of sustaining global growth, reducing poverty in Africa, and combating terrorism and its financing · to examine how the IMF has approached these issues, and related work of the G7 · to explore how the G7, IMF and other international institutions are addressing global growth and development challenges in the context of the new processes of regionalism. Pressures such as currency consolidation in Asia and economic union in Africa are studied. This book builds on previous volumes in the series with a heavy focus on the World Bank, the regional development banks and the many other international institutions that work in the field of development.

Book Description
Why has European growth slowed down since the 1990s while American productivity growth has speeded up? This book provides a thorough and detailed analysis of the sources of growth from a comparative industry perspective. It argues that Europe's slow growth is the combined result of a severe productivity slowdown in traditional manufacturing and other goods production, and a concomitant failure to invest in and reap the benefits from Information and Communications Technology (ICT), in particular in market services. The analysis is based on rich new databases including the EU KLEMS growth accounting database and provides detailed background of the data construction. As such, the book provides new methodological perspectives and serves as a primer on the use of data in economic growth analysis. More generally, it illustrates to the research and policy community the benefits of analysis based on detailed data on the sources of economic growth.

Book Description
Germany has been a central player in discussions on the future architecture of Europe, and has been called on to play a larger role in supporting global and, especially, European recovery from the financial crisis that triggered the Great Recession. This book focuses on the possible economic role of Germany and shows that the quantitative effects of a German fiscal stimulus would be small on the heavily indebted euro area periphery countries that most need the boost. The book finds that Germany itself faces a growth challenge and that efforts to raise its own growth potential are important for Germany, and that more rapid growth of domestic demand will more powerfully stimulate European economic growth through its expanded demand for imports.

Book Description
Humankind faces two formidable challenges in the 21st century: rapid ecological decline and continuing world poverty. The author argues that both problems are rooted in our economic concepts, which for the past 500 years have been powerfully shaped by the reality and ideology of capitalism. We must now develop a new mode of economic thought to guide us through the profound changes required to achieve sustainable and global well-being. To this end, the author proposes a set of terms, concepts, and analytical tools that are collectively known as the Economics of Needs and Limits, or ENL. Unlike conventional economic theories, which explain how an economy functions, ENL is a set of guiding principles that permits analysts to establish rational economic objectives. Such a framework is a requirement for moving our civilization beyond destructive growth and into the equitable, post-expansionary stage of its evolution.
