L'intégration de matériaux à changement de phase (MCP) dans les systèmes frigorifiques a le potentiel d'augmenter leur flexibilité, de stabiliser les températures des produits, et peut dans certaines conditions réduire leur consommation d'énergie. Cette thèse étudie plus particulièrement l'effet de l'intégration de MCP dans un meuble frigorifique de vente. Deux montages expérimentaux, l'un portant sur un meuble ouvert et un second sur un meuble fermé ainsi qu'un modèle numérique ont été développés afin de vérifier la faisabilité de cette technologie pour ce système et d'étudier l'impact de la présence du stockage sur son comportement thermique. Une étude paramétrique a permis de mettre en avant la nécessité de l'optimisation des meubles après intégration des MCP. Par ailleurs, des scénarios d'utilisation des MCP sont également présentés. Les principaux résultats montrent la faisabilité de la technologie, une augmentation significative de l'inertie thermique du meuble et la possibilité de maintenir la température des produits lors d'un arrêt de la machine frigorifique pendant plusieurs heures.

La part de consommation d’énergie du froid ménager représente 20% de la consommation des usages spécifiques de l’électricité des ménages, ce qui en fait un gisement d’économie d’énergie appréciable dans le résidentiel et qui justifie l’intérêt accru que l’on porte au froid domestique. Ce travail de thèse vise à évaluer l’effet de la mise en œuvre d’un matériau à changement de phase (PCM) dans un réfrigérateur domestique et de développer un outil de simulation qui permet de prédire les performances du système et d’optimiser sa conception. La conception et l’instrumentation d’un prototype de réfrigérateur avec matériau à changement de phase, ont permis d’évaluer les performances d’un tel système en termes d'autonomie et d'efficacité énergétique pour différentes charges thermiques. L’analyse des résultats des essais a mis en lumière l’ensemble des paramètres influençant les performances du système. Afin d’optimiser la conception d’un tel système un modèle dynamique couplant les transferts dans le matériau à changement de phase et cycle à compression de vapeur a été développé et validé expérimentalement. Ce modèle permet d’estimer les évolutions des principaux paramètres de fonctionnement tel que l’autonomie, la température de l’air dans l’enceinte réfrigérée et la consommation d’énergie du système. Les résultats numériques et expérimentaux obtenus montrent une nette réduction des fluctuations de température dans l'enceinte réfrigérée et une amélioration du comportement du système en termes d'autonomie et d'efficacité énergétique.

The unlikely refuge of Shanghai, the only city in the world that did not require a visa, was buffeted by the struggle between European imperialism, Japanese aggression, and Chinese nationalism. Ernest G. Heppner's compelling testimony is a brilliant account of this little-known haven. Although Heppner was a member of a privileged middle-class Jewish family, he suffered from the constant anti-Semitic undercurrent in his surroundings. The devastation of "Crystal Night" in November 1938, however, introduced a new level of Nazi horror and ended his comfortable world overnight. Heppner and his mother used the family's resources to escape to Shanghai. Heppner was taken aback by experiences on the ocean liner that transported the refugees to Shanghai: he was embarrassed and confounded when Egyptian Jews offered worn clothing to the Jewish passengers, he resented the edicts against Jewish passengers disembarking in any ports on the way, and he was unprepared for the poverty and cultural dislocation of the great city of Shanghai. Nevertheless, Heppner was self-reliant, energetic, and clever, and his story of finding niches for his skills that enabled him to survive in a precarious fashion is a tribute to human endurance. In 1945, after the liberation of China, Heppner found a responsible position with the American forces there. He and his wife, whom he had met and married in the ghetto, arrived in the United States in 1947 with only eleven dollars but boundless hope and energy. Heppner's account of the Shanghai ghetto is as vivid to him now as it was then. His admiration for his new country and his later success in business do not, however, obscure for him the shameful failure of the Allies to furnish a refuge for Jews before, during, and after the war.

All advanced economies have experienced a secular decline in the share of manufacturing employment—a phenomenon referred to as deindustrialization. This paper argues that, contrary to popular perceptions, deindustrialization is not a negative phenomenon, but is the natural consequence of the industrial dynamism in an already developed economy, and that North-South trade has had very little to do with deindustrialization. The paper also discusses the implications of deindustrialization for the growth prospects and the nature of labor market arrangements in the advanced economies.
