Book Description
Rising awareness of and increased attention to sexual harassment has resulted in momentum to implement sexual harassment prevention efforts in higher education institutions. Work on preventing sexual harassment is an area that has recently garnered a lot of attention, especially around education and programs that go beyond the standard anti-sexual harassment trainings often used to comply with legal requirements. On April 20-21, 2021, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted the workshop Developing Evaluation Metrics for Sexual Harassment Prevention Efforts. The workshop explored approaches and strategies for evaluating and measuring the effectiveness of sexual harassment interventions being implemented at higher education institutions and research and training sites, in order to assist institutions in transforming promising ideas into evidence-based best practices. Workshop participants also addressed methods, metrics, and measures that could be used to evaluate sexual harassment prevention efforts that lead to change in the organizational climate and culture and/or a change in behavior among community members. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

Book Description
This book combines the synergies between performance improvement systems to help ensure safe and reliable operations, streamline procedures and cross-system auditing, and supporting regulatory and corporate compliance requirements. Many metrics are common to more than one area, such that a well-designed and implemented integrated management system will reduce the load on the Process Safety, SHE, Security and Quality groups, and improve manufacturing efficiency and customer satisfaction. Systems to improve performance include: process safety; traditional safety, health and environment; and, product quality. Chapters include: Integrating Framework; Securing Support & Preparing for Implementation; Establishing Common Risk Management Systems – How to Integrate PSM into Other EH; Testing Implementation Approach; Developing and Agreeing on Metrics; Management Review; Tracking Integration Progress and Measuring Performance; Continuous Improvement; Communication of Results to Different Stakeholders; Case Studies; and Examples for Industry.

Book Description
The International Civil Aviation Organization has mandated that all of its member states implement Safety Management Systems (SMS) in their aviation industries. Responding to that call, many countries are now in various stages of SMS development, implementation, and rulemaking. In their first book, Safety Management Systems in Aviation, Stolzer, Halford, and Goglia provided a strong theoretical framework for SMS, along with a brief discourse on SMS implementation. This follow-up book provides a very brief overview of SMS and offers significant guidance and best practices on implementing SMS programs. Very specific guidance is provided by industry experts from government, industry, academia, and consulting, who share their invaluable insights from first-hand experience of all aspects of effective SMS programs. The contributing authors come from all facets of aviation, including regulation and oversight, airline, general aviation, military, airport, maintenance, and industrial safety. Chapters address important topics such as how to develop a system description and perform task analyses, perspectives on data sharing, strategies for gaining management support, establishing a safety culture, approaches to auditing, integrating emergency planning and SMS, and more. Also included is a fictional narrative/story that can be used as a case study on SMS implementation. Implementing Safety Management Systems in Aviation is written for safety professionals and students alike.

Book Description
This book explores the treatment of safety risks in railways, analysing both heavy rail and metros. It is structured into eight chapters, and starts with the idea of risk and the history of the human perception of risk. Following on from that, utilising four real-life projects, an extensive review of existing risk analysis methodologies and processes is provided and summarised, including the relationships between different methodologies. Different Inquiry Systems (namely Leibnizian, Kantian, Hegelian, Lockean and Singerian) and the Delphi technique were utilised in this analysis of Safety Case requirements. Based on the findings of the analysis, the book identifies a set of high level requirements for an integrated and holistic safety analysis and management process system and the Safety Case. The book details a framework consisting of both existing and novel methodologies which has been developed and implemented on the two largest London Underground projects, Victoria Line Upgrade Programme and Subsurface Railway Upgrade Programme, over a period of two years. During this trial, several gaps in the process were identified, allowing new methodologies and processes to be defined and implemented in order to complete the framework. The trial was successful, and the new framework, referred to as the Engineering Safety and Assurance Case Management Process, has now been implemented across the London Underground Capital Programmes Directorate.

Book Description
The few models on safety management that are available tend to explain a procedure to manage safety rather than a safety management system. The research carried out here, however, models safety management by transforming a common procedural model (i.e. the HSE's model, 1997) into a functional systems representation. The overall goal of the model is to offer clear graphic lines of influence of its different components on organisational safety. The model is innovative not in the components that it considers but in the representation of those components, which details relative distances between elements and, therefore, opens doors to model-driven hypotheses which account for those distances. Therefore, hypotheses are more accurate in their predictions. This model is firstly explored in the construction sector. Results from this exploratory research support the adequacy of the model to understanding safety management and encourage future research of a more confirmatory nature.
