Book Description
This book focuses on the intelligent application of advanced information technology tools (such as CAD and KBES) to design and planning in construction. It describes and explains the current applications of computer tools, presents new ideas for their use in design and planning processes, and in particular, concentrates on the preliminary design stage. Computer Integrated Planning and Design for Construction aims to demonstrate the implementation of these ideas and uncover the extraordinary opportunities for design improvement as a result.

Book Description
This book provides an extensive review of three interrelated issues: land fragmentation, land consolidation, and land reallocation, and it presents in detail the theoretical background, design, development and application of a prototype integrated planning and decision support system for land consolidation. The system integrates geographic information systems (GIS) and artificial intelligence techniques including expert systems (ES) and genetic algorithms (GAs) with multi-criteria decision methods (MCDM), both multi-attribute (MADM) and multi-objective (MODM). The system is based on four modules for measuring land fragmentation; automatically generating alternative land redistribution plans; evaluating those plans; and automatically designing the land partitioning plan. The presented research provides a new scientific framework for land-consolidation planning both in terms of theory and practice, by presenting new findings and by developing better tools and methods embedded in an integrated GIS environment. It also makes a valuable contribution to the fields of GIS and spatial planning, as it provides new methods and ideas that could be applied to improve the former for the benefit of the latter in the context of planning support systems. “From the 1960s, ambitious research activities set out to observe regarding IT-support of the complex and time consuming redistribution processes within land consolidation – without any practically relevant results, until now. This scientific work is likely to close that gap. This distinguished publication is highly recommended to land consolidation planning experts, researchers and academics alike.” – Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Thomas, Münster/ Germany "Planning support systems take new scientific tools based on GIS, optimisation and simulation and use these to inform the process of plan-making and policy. This book is one of the first to show how this can be consistently done and it is a triumph of demonstrating how such systems can be made operational. Essential reading for planners, analysts and GI scientists." – Prof. Michael Batty, University College London

Book Description
Information Technology Planning provides librarians and electronic resource planners with innovative suggestions and strategies for creating the digital library for the twenty-first century. Full of information on technological advances and resource assessment, this book explores the best ways to make your library accessible to users and discusses user-centered decision-making techniques. With Information Technology Planning, you’ll choose the appropriate electronic resources for your library to best serve the needs of your patrons.Examining electronic resource redesigning and implementation, this book offers you examples of how other institutions, such as Carnegie Mellon University Libraries, the University of Arizona Libraries, the Central Library of Multnomah County, Oregon, and the University of Rochester Libraries, are working to supply relevant and vast amounts of information to their patrons. Information Technology Planning provides you with many methods and suggestions that will improve your institution’s electronic resource capabilities, including: understanding the basic needs of a digital library--database development, online public access catalogs (OPACs), networking, hardware and wiring, licensing, authentication, and security--and how to choose the right resources for your institution using a 13-category planning checklist that examines database selection, pricing, and funding issues for implementing shared research databases in a consortium environment combining internal reviews, heuristic reviews, usability testing, and field testing to measure the usability of a web page examining the benefits of outcome-based education (OBE) to schools and librarians, such as increased learning and designing a curriculum based on the resources of a specific institution questioning issues such as convenience, funding, information needs, licensing, and satisfaction of students/faculty when deciding upon delivery services for electronic resources applying the eight “rules of thumb” for cost effectiveness when choosing delivery options for electronic bibliographic databases acknowledging the immediate and future potential perils of computers and too much informationOffering you many proven methods and procedures, this book contains question-and-answer sections, appendices, research, and an example patron evaluation to assist you in choosing and evaluating which resources will work best for your library. From Information Technology Planning, you’ll receive the necessary groundwork for reorganizing and enhancing your library’s digital resources in order to effectively meet patron demands well into the next century.
