Book Description
The International Air Quality Advisory Board established an Expert Group on Monitoring to examine environmental monitoring programs across the entire Canada-US transboundary region. This report summarizes the activities of the Expert Group. It begins with discussion of the integrated monitoring approach explored by the Expert Group. Section 2 analyzes the monitoring project inventory sponsored by the Board and how the inventory could be improved. Section 3 describes a series of workshops and meetings designed specifically to address monitoring issues of regional interest that affect the transboundary environment. The primary foci of these events were: the St. Croix River area; effects of air pollution on forests, and water quality monitoring; human health issues; and environmental concerns on the prairies. Section 4 offers observations on the workshop process. Section 5 provides examples of integrated monitoring programs and activities, mainly in Canada and the United States. Section 6 outlines general conclusions based on the workshop results. The final section contains the Expert Group's recommendations regarding the adoption of integrated monitoring and related matters.

User's Guide to a Data Base of Current Environmental Monitoring Projects in the US-Canadian Transboundary Region
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages :
Book Description
This document describes how to use a data base of current transboundary region environmental monitoring projects. The data base was prepared from data provided by Glantz et al. (1986) and Concord Scientific Corporation (1985), and contains information on 226 projects with monitoring stations located within 400 km (250 mi) of the US-Canadian border. The data base is designed for use with the dBASE III PLUS data management systems on IBM-compatible personal computers. Data-base searches are best accomplished using an accompanying command file called RETRIEVE or the dBASE command LIST. The user must carefully select the substrings on which the search is to be based. Example search requests and subsequent output are presented to illustrate substring selections and applications of the data base. 4 refs., 15 figs., 4 tabs.

Transboundary Policy Challenges in the Pacific Border Regions of North America
Author: Donald K. Alper
Publisher: University of Calgary Press
ISBN: 1552382230
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 354
Book Description
"Transboundary Policy Challenges" responds to a growing interest in borderlands environmental policy by highlighting significant transboundary research and practices being undertaken within and across the Pacific border regions of North America. Growing concern about the seriousness of environmental problems, particularly in high-growth border areas, coupled with the rising awareness of the complexities entailed in wise development decisions, has spurred recognition that new realities require new responses. Critical for effective environmental protection, restoration, and education is a sharing of understanding and effort across borders. "Transboundary Policy Challenges" advances transborder environmental research and discusses sensible policy directions with particular focus on critical areas of international concern and engagement: land and water use planning; regional growth management; trade and transportation corridors; environmental education; and travel and tourism. Contributors to the volume represent a range of disciplines, as well as institutions in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
