Book Description
For Humanity's Sake is the first study in English to trace the genealogy of the classic Russian novel, from Pushkin to Tolstoy to Dostoevsky. Lina Steiner demonstrates how these writers' shared concern for individual and national education played a major role in forging a Russian cultural identity. For Humanity's Sake highlights the role of the critic Apollon Grigor'ev, who was first to formulate the difference between Western European and Russian conceptions of national education or Bildung – which he attributed to Russia's special sociopolitical conditions, geographic breadth, and cultural heterogeneity. Steiner also shows how Grigor'ev's cultural vision served as the catalyst for the creative explosion that produced Russia's most famous novels of the 1860s and 1870s. Positing the classic Russian novel as an inheritor of the Enlightenment's key values – including humanity, self-perfection, and cross-cultural communication – For Humanity's Sake offers a unique view of Russian intellectual history and literature.

Book Description
Engaging with the Complex Subject of Theological Anthropology. Theological anthropology is a complicated doctrinal subject that needs to be elaborated with careful attention to its relation to other major doctrines. Among other things, it must confess the glory and misery of humanity, from creation in the image of God to the fall into a state of sin. It must reckon with a holism that spans distinctions between body, soul, and spirit, and a unity that encompasses male and female, as well as racial and cultural difference. The Christian Doctrine of Humanity represents the proceedings of the sixth annual Los Angeles Theology Conference, which sought, constructively and comprehensively, to engage the task of theological anthropology. The twelve diverse essays in this collection include discussions on: Human thought and the image of God. The relevance of biblical eschatology for philosophical anthropology. Living and flourishing in the Spirit. Vocation and the "oddness" of human nature. Each of the essays collected in this volume engage with Scripture as well as with others in the field—theologians both past and present, from different confessions—in order to provide constructive resources for contemporary systematic theology and to forge a theology for the future.

Book Description
"God's Physics": A New Science Transforming the World & Our Life Science is currently undergoing a profound "Paradigmatic-Shift" from the Old "Material-Causal" Paradigm of 20th Century's Relativity Theory and Quantum Mechanics to the New "God's Physics" Paradigm: Succinctly stated, 'God's Physics' replaces our old way of looking at the world as created by a "random Big-Bang" nuclear explosion towards an exciting new realization that our entire physical universe, our bodies and minds, and our total physical and human existence are all being continuously created by a singular higher "Universal Consciousness Reality" – 'God'! Yes, according to this New 'God's Physics' Paradigm there exists a singular higher 'Universal Consciousness Reality' which "produces", "remembers", "sustains" and "evolves" every small "pixel" in our entire physical universe – including our own body and mind, helps and encourages us to lead a moral, purposeful and meaningful life! Indeed, according to this New 'God's Physics' understanding of the world, everything in our universe, e.g., from the tiniest cells in our bodies, every atom in the universe, every rock, plant, animal or human being – are all being produced and re-produced a "billion-billion-billion" times (per second!) by this singular higher 'Universal Consciousness Reality' (UCR), i.e., 'God'! Indeed, this profound new scientific discovery comes along with the realization that this singular higher 'Universal Consciousness Reality' cares about our own 'moral-choices', evolves every small 'pixel' in the universe as well as us as (intelligent conscious) human beings towards leading a Moral, Spiritual Existence within an "awakened" New Morally and Spiritually Perfected World! Therefore, the discovery of this new (exciting) "God's Physics" not only resolves the biggest unresolved "Scientific Enigma" that Einstein was working on for half of his illustrious scientific career – but also completely transf

The Minority Rights Group (MRG) is an international human rights charity working to investigate and publicise the position of disadvantaged groups. This book is a compilation of the 11 annual lectures of the group, brought together with a special introduction in one volume for the first time in order to make them available to a wider audience.

Book Description
This thought-provoking collection of essays explores what constitutes the ethical domain, ethical practice, ethics education, and ethics - all in the context of sport. Sport Ethics in Context goes beyond the usual focus in sport ethics on responsibilities, and explores ethical responsibilities to teammates, coaches, and others associated with a team. As well, this collection describes a ""new sport ethics,"" through which participants might come to question those practices that sport discipline creates. The author argues that if sport is to be a vehicle for a better understanding of and appreciation for ethical responses, it is necessary to pay attention to just what is at stake in the ethical domain, including the components of ethical response and how sport leaders might facilitate ethical responses in a sport environment.

Book Description
The modern British Commonwealth, linking fifty countries around the world in voluntary association, cooperation, and consultation, is a unique body in world history. The area of its member countries covers a third of the globe and collectively their peoples represent a quarter of the world's total population. Though essentially different from the British Empire from which it originated, the Commonwealth shares many common historical ties with Britain. Patricia M. Larby and Harry Hannam have assembled an unrivaled body of literature to illustrate the growth of the Empire into the Commonwealth. This extensive bibliography identifies, lists, and annotates the most important publications on the development and growth of the Commonwealth; its present status and functions; and its role in education, literature, sport, and the arts and sciences. It includes its historical origins: its cooperation in economics, politics, and international issues such as the environment; and its many spheres of professional activity including medicine, law, and architecture. Strong emphasis is placed on the role of the English language in the Commonwealth and as a medium for creative literature in many disparate cultures worldwide. The Commonwealth appears at a time when this unique organization is on the threshold of a new era in its history. The proposals emerging from the 1991 Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting include statements on democracy and human rights; environmental affairs; and global concerns such as international crime, drug abuse, and AIDS. No previous comprehensive bibliography of the Commonwealth exists, and this volume fills a long-standing gap in the bibliographical coverage. It will be an essential reference source for libraries and scholars involved in Commonwealth studies and will be of particular interest to historians, political scientists, economists, and educators.

Book Description
Hannah Arendt's most important contribution to political thought may be her well-known and often-cited notion of the "right to have rights." In this incisive and wide-ranging book, Peg Birmingham explores the theoretical and social foundations of Arendt's philosophy on human rights. Devoting special consideration to questions and issues surrounding Arendt's ideas of common humanity, human responsibility, and natality, Birmingham formulates a more complex view of how these basic concepts support Arendt's theory of human rights. Birmingham considers Arendt's key philosophical works along with her literary writings, especially those on Walter Benjamin and Franz Kafka, to reveal the extent of Arendt's commitment to humanity even as violence, horror, and pessimism overtook Europe during World War II and its aftermath. This current and lively book makes a significant contribution to philosophy, political science, and European intellectual history.
