Sustainability Assessment of Urban Systems
Author: Claudia R. Binder
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108655246
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 523
Book Description
Our world is becoming more urban. More than fifty percent of the global population now lives in cities, which poses new challenges for sustainable development. This book integrates theory and methods of sustainability assessment with concepts from systems science to provide guidelines for assessing the sustainability of urban systems. It discusses different aspects of urban sustainability, from energy and housing, to mobility and health, covering social, economic and environmental factors, as well as the various stakeholders and actors involved. The book argues for the need to find models and solutions in order to design sustainable cities of the future in light of the complexity of urban social life. Including diverse case studies from the developed and developing world, this book provides a useful reference for researchers and students from a broad range of disciplines working in the field of sustainability, as well as for environmental consultants and policy makers.

Logistics Social Responsibility and Dynamic Capabilities: Conceptualization and Empirical Analysis
Author: Tim Gruchmann
Publisher: kassel university press GmbH
ISBN: 3737605742
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 190
Book Description
Logistics Social Responsibility (LSR) emerged as a concept to integrate sustainability throughout logistics-oriented processes in the supply chain. Hence, logistics services are linked to sustainability requirements. To meet these requirements, logistics service providers can respond to their responsibility by reducing the ecological and social impact in the supply chain. Moreover, it has been recognized that consumers also need to adapt to sustainability requirements: e.g., by supporting sustainable logistics strategies with their monetary “votes” or by changing their own consumption behavior. This “shared responsibility” requires mutual support and cooperation. Therefore, the core of this dissertation is that logistics service providers can further support sustainable development by facilitating more sustainable consumer choices. To enhance LSR activities, the link to the dynamic capabilities theory is investigated. Here, several capabilities have been identified through which managers can pool their knowledge and skills to generate new knowledge, solutions or resource configurations. Using these capabilities in a strategic manner, logistics service providers can purposefully change their business environment by forming new partnerships or changing existing relationships to gain from developing new business practices stressing sustainable purposes.

Energy-Related Material Flow Simulation in Production and Logistics
Author: Sigrid Wenzel
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031342186
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
This book provides for the first time an overview on the current approaches and applications of energy aspects in production and logistics by the use of simulation techniques. During the last decade, the importance of energy in the material flow processes has become more and more important. The pressure to reduce the environmental footprint of production and logistics systems will even intensify in future. Therefore, enterprises have started to integrate the use of energy into their planning processes much more than before, even designing feedback loops, e.g., from energy control to production control. This receives additional attention with the increasing use of renewable, but less reliable, energy sources. Care must be taken to establish processes that aim to use energy when it is available. As an example, many industrial processes like melting or coating have significant energy demands, but could vary the point of time of its consumption within specific limits, leading to a very high complexity. It discusses the construction and application of energy-specific performance indicators and analyzes the input information that needs to be acquired before implementing suitable models. On this basis, concrete technical solutions are introduced.

Artificial Intelligence Solutions for Cyber-Physical Systems
Author: Pushan Kumar Dutta
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1040125166
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 465
Book Description
Smart manufacturing environments are revolutionizing the industrial sector by integrating advanced technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics, to achieve higher levels of efficiency, productivity, and safety. However, the increasing complexity and interconnectedness of these systems also introduce new security challenges that must be addressed to ensure the safety of human workers and the integrity of manufacturing processes.
