Il existe de nombreux livres qui se proposent de présenter l’islam, mais rares sont ceux qui ont une valeur historique aussi importante que celui-ci et qui, en plus d’être complets, sont accessibles à tout public. La rédaction de cet ouvrage fait suite à la demande au professeur Muhammad Hamidullah d’un Américain converti à l’islam de livres pour approfondir ses connaissances religieuses. Constatant qu’il n’existait pas beaucoup de livres disponibles en langue française, il sollicita une douzaine d’amis et confia à chacun d’entre eux la rédaction d’un chapitre. Il se fixa l’objectif de réunir la rigueur des orientalistes et les convictions fortes d’un croyant. Au bout de 3 mois, il fut le seul à avoir écrit son chapitre, ses amis promirent de finir le mois suivant, mais à chaque fois, il fut le seul à avancer dans l’écriture. Au bout de quelques mois, le livre fut terminé, entièrement écrit par ses soins. Malgré ses faibles moyens, il le fit éditer à ses frais. Le livre est aujourd’hui traduit dans une douzaine de langues. Afin de faire revivre le patrimoine islamique francophone et faire connaître l’érudition de ce grand savant qu’est le professeur Hamidullah, les éditions Héritage sont heureuses de rééditer cet ouvrage qui permettra aux musulmans d’approfondir leurs connaissances et aux non-musulmans d’avoir accès aux informations les plus essentielles pour une meilleure connaissance de l’islam et des musulmans.

1. Dans la nature, tout est en évolution constante. C’est vrai des créatures comme de la religion des créatures. 2. Le grand philosophe-biologue, Ibn Miskawayh du Ve siècle de l’hégire (voir son al-Fawz al-asghar) fait l’intéressante observation suivante : 3. Dieu créa d’abord la chose inanimée et la dota du pouvoir d’évoluer. Elle se multiplia et se diversifia, obtenant de plus en plus la perfection, jusqu’à ce qu’elle atteignît la zone des plantes, la plus haute espèce des choses inanimées et la plus basse espèce des plantes se confondant. La marque distinctive des choses inanimées est qu’elles ne peuvent bouger d’elles-mêmes dans aucune direction. 4. La plante continua aussi l’évolution — son espèce la plus haute étant le dattier — jusqu’à ce qu’elle entra dans la zone des animaux. Tout comme pour un animal, si vous coupez la tête du dattier, l’arbre tout entier sèche (meurt), contrairement à ce qui est vrai des branches des arbres de grade inférieur. Selon l’observation d’al-Dînawarî, la femelle des dattiers a même la capacité de s’amouracher : elle choisit parfois un palmier mâle et dans son penchant vers lui, elle se tourne et s’incline physiquement vers son bien-aimé. Si le jardinier lui procure le pollen d’un autre dattier mâle que celui qu’elle aime, elle ne se fructifie pas et devient malade. Et quand le jardinier découvre son réel bien-aimé et transporte le pollen de celui-ci, le dattier femelle devient vigoureux et donne de bons fruits. Les plantes, au contraire des choses inanimées, se meuvent, dans le sens de grandir, s’élargir et grossir, mais néanmoins sans capacité de se déplacer à leur volonté : elles restent attachées à un endroit fixe. 5. L’animal suit aussi le chemin de l’évolution. Son espèce la plus basse reste attachée à un lieu fixe, toutefois elle possède un certain sens de sorte qu’elle réagit quand on la touche. Plus haut en grade l’animal, plus grand le nombre de sens qu’il possède, comme la vue, l’ouïe, le goût, etc., jusqu’à ce qu’il obtienne tous les cinq sens. L’espèce la plus évoluée des animaux est constituée par les singes qui se confondent avec l’espèce la moins évoluée des êtres humains. Les animaux se meuvent délibérément, d’endroit en endroit, et possèdent même certaines connaissances en sus de l’instinct. 6. L’homme aussi s’avance sur le chemin de l’évolution et, en sus des cinq sens animaux, il a non seulement la faculté du raisonnement, mais aussi des qualités nobles, telles que la charité, le sacrifice, la pitié, l’aide à qui en a besoin, et ainsi de suite. Les êtres humains les plus évolués — les saints — ressemblent aux êtres les plus bas de la zone céleste, et ils voient des choses qui sont invisibles aux hommes ordinaires.
