As a hot research topic since the eighties, face recognition still seems to be a di cult and largely problem. Distortions caused by variations in illumination, expression and pose are the main challenges to be dealt with by researchers in this eld. E cient recognition algorithms, robust against such distortions, are the main motivations of this research. Based on a detailed review on the background and wide applications of Gabor wavelet and new transforms (Contourlet, Curvelet and Steerable Pyramid) have emerged despite their improved directional elements and other promising abilities compared to traditional wavelet transform. In this book we have introduced Steerable pyramid as a new feature extraction tool for face representation respectively recognition. We also proposed face recognition based on multiple features fusion that combine two di erent representations of the face image. We examine the impact of information fusion both at the feature level and at the score level. Finally an automatic user identi cation system, is presented."

The adversarial aspect concerns defense and offense operations that involve impostors and identity theft. Denial and deception correspond to occlusion and disguise for biometrics, while for cyberspace security they correspond to spoofing and obfuscation. To prevent or mitigate the impacts of adversarial behavior from offensive attacks this thesis proposes the use of multi-layer data fusion. Multi-layer aspect of fusion refers to features, representations, algorithms, decision-making, adversarial aspects and their purposeful combinations. Face recognition is a classic problem in the field of computer vision and pattern recognition due to its wide applications in real-world problems such as access control, identity verification, physical security, surveillance, etc. Recent progress in deep learning techniques and the access to large-scale face databases has lead to a significant improvement of face recognition accuracy under constrained and semi-constrained scenarios. Deep neural networks are shown to surpass human performance on Labeled Face in the Wild (LFW), which consists of celebrity photos captured in the wild. However, in many applications, e.g. surveillance videos, where we cannot assume that the presented face is under controlled variations, the performance of current DNN-based methods drop significantly. The main challenges in such an unconstrained face recognition problem include, but are not limited to: lack of labeled data, robust face normalization, discriminative representation learning and the ambiguity of facial features caused by information loss.In this thesis, we propose a set of methods that attempt to address the above challenges in unconstrained face recognition systems. Starting from a classic deep face recognition pipeline, we review how each step in this pipeline could fail on low-quality uncontrolled input faces, what kind of solutions have been studied before, and then introduce our proposed methods. The various methods proposed in this thesis are independent but compatible with each other. Experiment on several challenging benchmarks, e.g. IJB-C and IJB-S show that the proposed methods are able to improve the robustness and reliability of deep unconstrained face recognition systems. Our solution achieves state-of-the-art performance, i.e. 95.0% TAR FAR=0.001% on IJB-C dataset and 61.98% Rank1 retrieval rate on the surveillance-to-booking protocol of IJB-S dataset.

The NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Face Recognition: From Theory to Applications took place in Stirling, Scotland, UK, from June 23 through July 4, 1997. The meeting brought together 95 participants (including 18 invited lecturers) from 22 countries. The lecturers are leading researchers from academia, govemment, and industry from allover the world. The lecturers presented an encompassing view of face recognition, and identified trends for future developments and the means for implementing robust face recognition systems. The scientific programme consisted of invited lectures, three panels, and (oral and poster) presentations from students attending the AS!. As a result of lively interactions between the participants, the following topics emerged as major themes of the meeting: (i) human processing of face recognition and its relevance to forensic systems, (ii) face coding, (iii) connectionist methods and support vector machines (SVM), (iv) hybrid methods for face recognition, and (v) predictive learning and performance evaluation. The goals of the panels were to provide links among the lectures and to emphasis the themes of the meeting. The topics of the panels were: (i) How the human visual system processes faces, (ii) Issues in applying face recognition: data bases, evaluation and systems, and (iii) Classification issues involved in face recognition. The presentations made by students gave them an opportunity to receive feedback from the invited lecturers and suggestions for future work.
