Book Description
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) are complex diseases. Despite increased knowledge on the pathophysiological process, many aspects remain rather unclear, especially concerning IBD. This book gathers current methods of treatment of these diseases and also presents the management of their complications. The authors give a comprehensive overview of the newer therapies to bring readers up to date.

Book Description
The present invention provides methods for preventing colon cancer by administering, to a patient in need thereof, a polymeric proanthocyanidin composition from a Croton species or Calophyllum species in an amount sufficient to prevent colon cancer, which composition inhibits COX-2. The present invention also provides methods for treating inflammation locally in the intestines comprising administering to a patient in need thereof, a polymeric proanthocyanidin composition from a Croton species or Calophyllum species in an amount sufficient to treat inflammation. In one embodiment, the polymeric proanthocyanidin compound is crofelemer. The present invention in alternative embodiments provides methods for treating pain locally in the intestines and treating inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, as well as for treating familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP).

Book Description
Nowadays, we are dealing more frequently with the entity of large intestine polyps, as endoscopy and bowel cancer screening programmes are rapidly expanding. Often a single polyp is involved, but more complex situations are also encountered, including the well-defined pattern of polyposis. These situations can fall into a gray area, not only for diagnosis, but also for the correct treatment and follow-up. New developments in pathophysiology and treatment options are leading to new questions. This handbook aims to offer a integrated approach for all physicians (doctors) who deal with these issues, by presenting up-to-date discussion from genetics through treatment, to implications of genetic counseling. It will also help specialists to offer more "evidence-based" treatments, by implementing the best clinical individual judgement informed by the best current scientific evidence.

Book Description
Adenomatous Polyps of the Colon: Pathobiological and Clinical Features consolidates the vast body of basic science and clinical data associated with adenomatous polyps of the colon, much of it inspired by the realization that most colorectal carcinomas seem to arise in such polyps. This book strives to evaluate these data, with particular emphasis on their implications for management of polyp-bearing subjects. Topics comprehensively explored include anatomy and histology of the normal colon; pathologic characteristics of adenomatous polyps, differential diagnosis, and grading schemes for degree of dysplasia and villosity; adenomatous polyposes; histologic and epidemiologic evidence for the malignant potential of adenomatous polyps; and detection and management, with special attention to endoscopy, endoscopic polypectomy, the malignant polyp, and post-polypectomy surveillance schedules.

Book Description
"Updates in Colo-Proctology" covers the proceedings of the Anglo-Swiss Colo-Proctology Meeting held in St Moritz in 1990. The book contains the papers which were presented and dis cussed there by physicians of the various specialties concerned with the care of patients with diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. The authors, each distinguished in a particular field, have contributed across a wide range of subjects and different dis ciplines. The topics covered include surgical and investigative techniques, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and specific infections. Being familiar with the previous literature, it is clear that little was really new among the themes presented in St Moritz, but few will deny that many of the techniques and methods of treatment described in this book are truly modern. Some contribute an entirely new dimension to the approach to well known colo-proctological conditions, while others may open up new paths for future research. In addition, in colo-proctology as in other disciplines, advances in treatment almost always bring new problems in the complications which attend them. These are the subject of some of the papers. Although it would be invidious to pick out individual contributions when there is so much that is new to talk about and so much that is old to be looked at in a new light, we should like to record how much we have enjoyed reading and collating these chapters. We hope that others will share our enthusiasm and pleasure.

Book Description
Grouping ulcerative colitis with Crohn's disease (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) in a teaching seminar has historical support. The medical literature includes descriptions of both diseases in the latter half of the 19th century; they share many symptoms; in some instances, differentiating them may be very difficult; and the cause of each remains unknown. Furthermore, one member of a family may suffer with Crohn's disease while another has ulcerative colitis. And both processes are prone to the late complications of carcinoma at a site of previous involvement. Finally, the investigators and students of one disease have usually also contributed to the understanding of the other disease. The incidence of Crohn's disease seems to be increasing rapidly. This has been sug gested by reports from Sweden, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, and South Africa as well as the United States. Though methods of recording data vary, the increase is further supported by cases of greater virulence, still younger ages of onset, and more cases in the elderly. This is remarkable when we consider that fifty years ago, when the classic description from Mt. Sinai Hospital was being prepared, the disease was rare. Since the cause remains elusive, we must try to cope with this entity as skillfully as we can, with consideration of indications, and timing of drug and surgical intervention. The choice of forms of management has been controversial, even among the most experi enced physicians.
