Book Description
Excerpt from India and Christian Missions IN preparing these pages for the press, I intended neither to write a large nor an elaborate book. In pleading the cause of Missions in various parts of England, I was struck with the large number of persons who felt greatly interested in the progress of Christianity in India, who knew comparatively little, in a definite form, of the country as a field for missions, yet who were quite prepared eagerly to accept of all the information that could be given them. It is for such that this volume is designed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Study of Christian Missions In its origin and history, Christianity stands dis tinguished from all the ethnic religions, or religions of some particular nation or race. Many religions have had their home exclusively within single races or peoples, making no effort, and showing no abil ity, to go farther in the world. Such were the religions of ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Scandi navia: such also is Hinduism, which is the religion of India alone; and reveals no missionary feeling toward mankind. Such is the religion Of China, which goes beyond its native realm only to influ ence kindred peoples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Missions, Vol. 1: Their Agents, and Their Results Mr. Marshall, the author of the following work, is an eminent Catholic gentleman of England, formerly a clergyman of the Established Church. As such, he was favorably known as the author of the best work on Episcopacy that has been written by any Protestant. His History of Missions is a work of extensive research and profound interest. The subject is one of great importance, including not only Catholic, but Protestant missions; a complete history of which is given as carried on in modern times in China, India, Ceylon, Antipodes, Oceanica, Africa, Levant, Syria, and Armenia, and North and South America. In treating the latter branch of his subject, namely, Protestant Missions, Mr. Marshall has cited an immense number of Protestant authorities, all concurring to prove with irresistible force the utter impotency of Protestant efforts to Christainize the heathen. The striking contrast exhibited by Catholic missions is clearly and eloquently portrayed. The work is one of the most valuable contributions to Catholic literature that has been given to the press in recent times. Its extensive circulation cannot fail to do great good, and it is therefore respectfully recommended by the American publishers to the patronage of the clergy and laity. The present is being printed from advanced sheets of the second edition, for which we made arrangements with the author. It has undergone a thorough revision, and over two hundred new authorities have been quoted by the author, making the work as complete as possible. As the work cost several thousand dollars to get out, the publishers trust that all who feel an interest in the circulation of good books will not only purchase it themselves, but will also induce their friends and neighbors to do likewise. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Christianity in India, Vol. 1: From the Commencement of the Christian Era; Second Portion, Comprising the History of Protestant Missions 1706 to 1816 In recording the foundation and progress of these institutions, I have studied to trace the leadings and operations of Divine Providence and Grace. Though the labourers were few, there have been among them men of Apostolic zeal, and endowed, I have some times been induced to think, with all but Apostolic gifts. They were Germans; and it cannot but be grateful to the Englishman's feelings to see the recep tion which they uniformly met with from the highest ecclesiastical authorities in England, and even from the King and Royal Family. But for the encourage ment and assistance thus afforded them, they could not, humanly speaking, have carried on their work. The Christian public, not in Great Britain only, but throughout the Continent of Europe, owes a deep, a lasting debt of gratitude to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, for the liberal patronage it afforded to these Missions almost from their com mencement. The publication of the first version of the Scriptures in an Indian language, the Tamul, is to be ascribed to that Society's assistance. I will confess, that, until I had investigated the entire series of the Society's Reports, together with the original correspondence and journals of the Missionaries, I had formed no conception of the extent, the value, the importance of the Society's labours in India during the first century of the Danish and English Missions.
