Author: E. F. K. Koerner
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN:
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
This alphabetical listing of more than 15,000 authors and their life-dates aims to be "universal" in the sense that it covers, as far as possible for the work of a single individual, all linguistic traditions from the earliest beginnings of reflection about the nature of language to the present. The volume is the fruit of the compiler's many years at the helm of Historiographia Linguistica: International Journal for the History of the Language Sciences (1973-) and it will be an invaluable resource for scholars and editors alike. While biographical data may be regarded by some as irrelevant or incidental to the history of particular linguistic ideas, experience has proven the usefulness of such basic information. Many of us can think of misrepresentations of chronology where the life-dates of an author under discussion were either not known or were simply ignored. At its most extreme, such ignorance could result in statements asserting that Edward Sapir was a student of Benjamin Lee Whorf, and that the latter had influenced the former in developing the famous Weltanschauungstheorie. But this index is not just for the beginning scholar in need of guidance -- it is an indispensable ready reference for anyone in the field.

Language in the Americas
Author: Joseph H. Greenberg
Publisher: Stanford University Press
ISBN: 0804788170
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 468
Book Description
This book is concerned primarily with the evidence for the validity of a genetic unit, Amerind, embracing the vast majority of New World languages. The only languages excluded are those belonging to the Na-Dene and Eskimo- Aleut families. It examines the now widely held view that Haida, the most distant language genetically, is not to be included in Na-Dene. It confined itself to Sapir's data, although the evidence could have been buttressed considerably by the use of more recent materials. What survives is a body of evidence superior to that which could be adduced under similar restrictions for the affinity of Albanian, Celtic, and Armenian, all three universally recognized as valid members of the Indo-European family of languages. A considerable number of historical hypotheses emerge from the present and the forthcoming volumes. Of these, the most fundamental bears on the question of the peopling of the Americas. If the results presented in this volume and in the companion volume on Eurasiatic are valid, the classification of the world's languages based on genetic criteria undergoes considerable simplification.

Nation and Region in Grierson’s Linguistic Survey of India
Author: Javed Majeed
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 0429799349
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 316
Book Description
George Abraham Grierson’s Linguistic Survey of India is one of the most complete sources on South Asian languages. This book is the first detailed examination of the Survey. It shows how the Survey collaborated with Indian activists to consolidate the regional languages in India. By focusing on India as a linguistic region, it was at odds with the colonial state’s conceptualisation of the subcontinent, in which religious and caste differences were key to its understanding of Indian society. A number of the Survey’s narratives are detachable from its rigorous linguistic imperatives, and together with aspects of Grierson’s other texts, these contributed to the way in which Indian nationalists appropriated and reshaped languages, making them religiously charged ideological symbols of particular versions of the subcontinent. Thus, the Survey played an important role in the emergence of religious nationalism and language conflict in the subcontinent in the 20th century. This volume, like its companion volume Colonialism and Knowledge in Grierson’s Linguistic Survey of India, will be a great resource for scholars and researchers of linguistics, language and literature, history, political studies, cultural studies and South Asian studies.
