James's life takes an unexpected turn early in his career when he meets a client—an accused thief named Oliver Thirst—for a drink and a chat in a pub. Although they could not be more different, James is drawn to Thirst's high intelligence and wit. Soon their illicit friendship develops into a dark and erotic ménage á trois with Daisy at the center. Now, eleven years later, one is dead and two are suspected of murder. The murder investigation at the center of this impossible-to-put-down novel uncovers the bizarre love story between the barrister, the American, and the thief. And, in the end, A Personal History of Thirst answers the question: What happens when genuine love becomes mixed with perverse obsession?

Called to Worship
Author: Vernon Whaley
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
ISBN: 1418580236
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 382
Book Description
What is worship? Biblically-speaking, worship might mean a lot of things: a celebration of God and his glory, a display of reverence and awe, an act of humility or prostration before our Creator. But what does this look like today? And do churches of today—of any tradition or denomination—really worship in a way that's biblical? Called to Worship is a deep dive into what worship means in the Bible. Vernon Whaley—Dean of the school of music at Liberty University—investigates each individual book of Scripture to uncover the tapestry of instruction and insight into God's idea of worship. With this book, you'll learn: How to see through the comfort zones of the modern church's worship rituals and routines. The biblical principles of worship and why understanding these principles is essential in our discipleship and important to our creator. How the life of Christ serves as a living guide to worship throughout the entire Bible and the history of Christianity. The Bible describes a rich history of Yahweh worship—offered first by the hosts of heaven in eternity past, and then by mankind, from Creation to present day. This book is a call to understand and participate in that richness.

A Thirst for Wine and War
Author: Adam D. Zientek
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0228019958
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 183
Book Description
Beginning in the fall of 1914, every French soldier on the Western Front received a daily ration of wine from the army. At first it was a modest quarter litre, but by 1917 it had increased to the equivalent of a full bottle each day. The wine ration was intended to sustain morale in the trenches, making the men more willing to endure suffering and boredom. The army also supplied soldiers with doses of distilled alcohol just before attacks to increase their ferocity and fearlessness. This strategic distribution of alcohol was a defining feature of French soldiers’ experiences of the war and amounted to an experimental policy of intoxicating soldiers for military ends. A Thirst for Wine and War explores the French army’s emotional and behavioural conditioning of soldiers through the distribution of a mind-altering drug that was later hailed as one of the army’s “fathers of victory.” The daily wine ration arose from an unexpected set of factors including the demoralization of trench warfare, the wine industry’s fear of losing its main consumers, and medical consensus about the benefits of wine drinking. The army’s related practice of distributing distilled alcohol to embolden soldiers was a double-edged sword, as the men might become unruly. The army implemented regulations and surveillance networks to curb men’s drinking behind the lines, in an attempt to ensure they only drank when it was useful to the war effort. When morale collapsed in spring 1917, the army lost control of this precarious system as drunken soldiers mutinied in the thousands. Discipline was restored only when the army regained command of soldiers’ alcohol consumption. Drawing on a range of archives, personal narratives, and trench journals, A Thirst for Wine and War shows how the French army’s intoxication of its soldiers constituted a unique exercise of biopower deployed on a mass scale.
