Book Description
There is a common but often unspoken arrogance on the part of outside observers that folk science and traditional knowledgeÑthe type developed by Native communities and tribal groupsÑis inferior to the Òformal scienceÓ practiced by Westerners. In this lucidly written and humanistic account of the OÕodham tribes of Arizona and Northwest Mexico, ethnobiologist Amadeo M. Rea exposes the limitations of this assumption by exploring the rich ornithology that these tribes have generated about the birds that are native to their region. He shows how these peoplesÕ observational knowledge provides insights into the behaviors, mating habits, migratory patterns, and distribution of local bird species, and he uncovers the various ways that this knowledge is incorporated into the communitiesÕ traditions and esoteric belief systems. Drawing on more than four decades of field and textual research along with hundreds of interviews with tribe members, Rea identifies how birds are incorporated, both symbolically and practically, into Piman legends, songs, art, religion, and ceremonies. Through highly detailed descriptions and accounts loaded with Native voice, this book is the definitive study of folk ornithology. It also provides valuable data for scholars of linguistics and North American Native studies, and it makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how humans make sense of their world. It will be of interest to historians of science, anthropologists, and scholars of indigenous cultures and folk taxonomy.

Book Description
Fleeing from the dangers of the wild, Tune Sparrow sets out to find the fabled wildlife preserve of Airia, a prosperous avian civilization. He flies over the fallen empire of Animalism across the dangerous marsh to the Great Pond. On a ship, Old Salt, a learned parrot, teaches him about Air-ism, Arias economic philosophy. In Airia, he learns about industry and honesty from Robin Thrush and the artisans of Best Nests. He learns about cunning and ingenuity from Merlin Falcon and the financial wizards of The Heights. Yet Tune loves and admires Aria Sparrow, a defiant critic of Air-ism. His experiences at Golden Sacks take him from crisis to crisis, all leading to a monumental clash. When Tune realizes the dangers of Merlins ruthless scheme, he sets out to resist his insane project, but he fears that it may be too late. His journey is one of idealism, achievement, disillusionment, and wisdom. The Wildlife Preserve of Airia is a fable about American capitalism. Inspired by George Orwells Animal Farm, it is a scathing satire of Wall Street and corporate America, and their culture of greed and selfishness. Yet it is also a tribute to the genius of Americas enduring ideals.

Book Description
Much of what is known about the universe came from the study of celestial shadows. This book looks in detail at the way eclipses and other celestial shadows have given us amazing insights into the nature of the objects in our solar system and how they are even helping us discover and analyze planets that orbit stars other than our Sun. A variety of eclipses, transits, and occultations of the mooons of Jupiter and Saturn, Pluto and its satellite Charon, asteroids and stars have helped astronomers to work out their dimensions, structures, and shapes - even the existence of atmospheres and structures of exoplanets. Long before Columbus set out to reach the Far East by sailing West, the curved shadow of the Earth on the Moon during a lunar eclipse revealed that we inhabit a round world, a globe. More recently, comparisons of the sunlit and Earthlit parts of the Moon have been used to determine changes in the Earth's brightness as a way of monitoring possible effects in cloud coverage which may be related to global warming. Shadows were used by the Greek mathematician Eratosthenes to work out the first estimate of the circumference of the Earth, by Galileo to measure the heights of the lunar mountains and by eighteenth century astronomers to determine the scale of the Solar System itself. Some of the rarest and most wonderful shadows of all are those cast onto Earth by the lovely "Evening Star" Venus as it goes between the Earth and the Sun. These majestic transits of Venus occur at most two in a century; after the 2012 transit, there is not a chance to observe this phenomenon until 2117, while the more common sweep of a total solar eclipse creates one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring events of nature. Though it may have once been a source of consternation or dread, solar eclipses now lead thousands of amateur astronomers and "eclipse-chasers" to travel the globe in order to experience the dramatic view under "totality." These phenomena are among the most spectacular available to observers and are given their full due in Westfall and Sheehan's comprehensive study.
